The Pro Primes are traditional PL cine lenses, I would guess that the next set of primes will be some disruptive lenses designed for the DSMC concept. And my gut tells me that the Pro Primes were a single run production, this is why they are not available for back order, after they ran out of 50 millimeters...

    OK then.

I think Jim's got balls enough to take on Canon in the still lens arena, but I don't see why he would. That is why I see it differently. On the other hand the DSMC concept, as it were, is a hybrid so it is possible that we may both be right to some degree. We shall see soon enough, I think!

Feeling luckily I got the set! 50mm is probly not used much since not many people use REDs to make documentaries. Also, you can get a zoom lens and there you have it ;)

I understand RED's need to change based on their exponential growth, also I don't expect an entire theory of life/details on new lenses, but it's on the schizoid side just dropping 50mm lenses in the store without any real notification. I recently made the bet, which i think is a good bet, to go with RED glass ... but wow ... just dropping a core lens in the store without any reason is weird. I'd like to at least hear something like: we are "updating" our 50mm lens and it will be back in the store after NAB.

    Hi Guys,

Just to be clear, I don't know anything you don't know, but let me make a couple of observations.

The world we live in here is pretty rarefied air. RED has redefined the high end cinema camera market and had a level of success that has expanded the market considerably. There are far more RED camera's in the world today that Arri ever sold 35mm film cameras.

That said, there are just not that many people that need to buy this level of gear. This holds true for PL glass to an even greater extent.

Let's say I was a maker of PL glass and had made a production run a couple of years back of a new lens series. They did well and as the reputation of my product increased, my product became more popular and sold steadily.

Now lets say for some reason there was a marked increase in lens sales that I hadn't predicted. (e.g. somebody released some new cameras that used my lenses.)

I've now got a problem on my hands, I'm out of inventory before I expected and I've really had limited ability to foresee this outcome.

I've already sold a lot of lenses into a pretty small market, and maybe it's not my core business, does it make sense for me to tool up again to produce the same glass? Maybe

Does it make sense to sell out my existing stock even if I don't have a new product ready to roll if my customers want to buy them, or before I'm ready to talk about my future plans. Yes I think that does make sense.

I don't know for sure what's coming, but I don't think there is any secret master plan to not tell customers what's up. I think they'll tell us when there is a clear path to what's next.

And if you find the guy who can infallibly identify what customers will buy and when, send him my way, I want to introduce him to my stock broker :-)

    Peter,

The whole set has disappeared because they can't sell it without 50mm which is a common lens.

I think RED decided to redesign that lens. I always thought it is a bit different then other ones.

    I really like their performance.
