  1. #1 ProEXR for Premiere
Hey everyone, I've got a beta version of an OpenEXR plug-in for Premiere. It will be part of the next rev of the ProEXR package. This beta runs for 90 days in trial mode.

    Download: Mac | Win

When installed in the proper MediaCore plug-in folder, you'll be able to import and export OpenEXR sequences in Premiere and Media Encoder. It has the same compression options that the After Effects plug-in has, and also lets you access alternate channels in a multi-channel EXR if you happen to have them. Timecode is supported on both input and output. This plug-in is built for CS5.5, but I can provide a CS5 version for any hold-outs; just email me.

Premiere actually has support for a linear floating point color space (who knew?), so that's what the plug-in uses. But unlike After Effects, Premiere does not let you control how color space conversions are done, so there's currently no way to set up a view LUT like you would with a real film workflow. The conversion from linear to video space is a simple gamma 2.2 operation.

I'm a VFX artist, not an editor, and this is my first Premiere plug-in, so your feedback is greatly appreciated. I don't plan to ship this thing for a few months, so there's plenty of time to get it right. Let me know what you think!

Awesome, tried it with QHD R3D in premiere, outputted using your plugin to openexr16 ... blender was able to read the file perfectly and track to 4k ;) Wonderful job ! No issues, no errors on my quick test ;) I bought your after effects plugin yesterday ... and this is like an easter egg !!! (actually i was thinking yesterday ... this would be so nice to use this openexr plugin in Premiere)

Under what sequence preset it should show up? I installed as recommended, but cannot see it available.

With premiere ... when u want to output a file ... using the menu "file ->export media"

then the "export settings" window should pop up. In that look at the "format" field, click on that and select "ProEXR"
after that ... in the "video" tab on that same window ... you should be able to select the compression option on the item "compression" (i use zip16"

    Patrick,

Thanks for responding. I figured it out, but is a good re-assuring that I am using the right route.

Right, there is currently no way to use EXR (or any other image sequence format) as your sequence's native codec. So any render previews will be in the MPEG-ish codec of your choice, which should also correspond to your external monitor setup, if any. Then when you export to EXR, everything will get re-rendered through the float pipeline.

    Brendan,

So, which would be the preferable pipeline if you export your graded footage in Resolve as OpenEXR? That way, you take advantage of the bit depth starting from there...

As I understand it, just import those EXRs into Premiere and set up a sequence with the resolution and frame rate you're using. You can choose any preset (i.e. editing mode) you want. So if you have an external video monitor, use the editing mode that matches it.

What's your final destination? If you're going to be exporting EXRs at the end, then I think the editing mode will only effect the previews as the whole thing will get re-rendered in float for the export.
