Can somebody with a RED and a DSLR do a very quick non-scientific test to compare the two? My feeling is that the RED is very similar to a DLSR in terms of dynamic range and noise but without actually seeing something it is hard to tell. Just a quick snap of a high-contrast scene would be very telling.

I'd be happy to do it myself extensively with a Nikon D200 when I get my camera (this month?) but if anyone could do something quick now that would be great.

Even better would be if we could find the DLSR that is the most "RED-like". Perfect for testing set-ups and spotting locations without needing access to a RED.

I'd be happy to shoot something for you tomorrow; I have a 5D (12MP FF) and an XTi (10MP crop) that would be good for comparisons. Just gotta wait until the sun comes up. :-)

Do you have the birger mount to shoot the RED with the same lenses?
I'd suggest that shooting a comparision without shooting the same lenses would be misleading for looking spatial quality and color but not for noise/latitude.

Oh that would be great! Just roughly the same field of view and same exposure would be fine for now. When the Birger mount comes we'll take it from there.

    Hi Sander,

Didn't forget about you but it was pouring rain in San Diego today (where I'm staying this week), and there wasn't an opportunity to get any nice shots. I will try again at my earliest convenience!

I already think it is great that you want to spend some time on it, so whenever you're ready. Actually I don't think it needs to be a nice shot either. Just something where you can compare dynamic range and possibly noise.

    Hi,

I appreciate it - I just like to do things right if I'm going to do them. :weight_lift: That being said, dynamic range was a consideration and seeing that it was a dull, dreary day, there wasn't much range to shoot.

...that and I didn't want to get all of my equipment wet. Soon!

This was shot with a DSLR... oh, no it wasn't. It was shot with the 18-50 RED Zoom. :-)
