Thought I'd throw it out there... any of you guys shoot much with your Scarlets/Epics in the snow? Obviously snow and vents don't mix and that big top vent scares me!

I've looked at the Ombre Covers and they look pretty nice but kinda big/bulky. You guys have any ideas out there?

Everything I use needs to fit into a backpack or attached to my snowmobile so I like to keep my kit as small as possible.

    Thanks!
    -Aaron

You could try one of Element Technica's Weather Covers: http://elementtechnica.mybigcommerce...nt-Protection/

Also, I know this is off topic, but how do you like the Manfrotto 504HD fluid head? I noticed you have one in your photo.

    Hey Brian,
We have a couple of 504 heads and really like them. They will be great for your camera when set up prety light, but might be a bit small for a fully loaded rig with external devices. We use a 509 for our larger rigs and 504 for lightweight stuff. The design and build is quite nice!

Hey i was just thinking about the same thing and i believe it's called geko skin or something like that. It's a flexible fabric that breaths but doesn't allow water to pass through it, used in marine vents and jet skis all the time.

I'll have to check tomorrow exactly what it's called...

yeah, i was just looking at the element technica one... looks decent, i just emailed ombre to see what they say, the imagine have on their site looks like a studio sized epic.
anyone have one of these? any preferences?

i was pretty skeptical of my 504 head at first... but once i mounted the tripod plate to the rails it really balanced the weight right in the middle and its super easy.
again, for me size & weight is super key, everything i take with me is either on my back or strapped to a snowmobile so its gonna be light, for the price the 504 is hard to beat.

might look into getting a cartoni gamma or something similar. i just like the manfrotto 535 carbon legs so much that switching to a 100mm bowl would be i'd have to get the bigger carbon sticks.

I'd love to hear any solutions for nasty snow protection. I shoot skiing, and its almost inevitable that a skier is going to spray you and completely cake both you and the camera, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. It happened yesterday with our Epic-- front intake fan totally full of snow, same with the top heatsink. Got as much snow out as I could, but some iced up inside the front fan. It made a god-awful terrifying noise as it spun and chipped away at the ice, and eventually it froze in place-- total silence. No fan until I was able to melt it out a bit. The cam continued to run, and it was quite cold outside so it didn't get anywhere close to heat shutdown, but I did nervously keep keep a close eye on the core temperature. Not very fun!
Obviously there has to be a good way of protecting, at the very least, these fans and vents. The rest of the body is pretty bomber and all other ports and openings are gaff taped over, so I'm not too worried about the rest of the body getting wet. But those fans scare the hell out of me.

This is very good to know! I tend to film in very dusty conditions so if dust/dirt were to get into that section how would you go about removing/cleaning it?

    Cheers

I shoot skiing as well. I am going with the Ombre one. I wish there was one more form fit to a minimal setup but couldn't find much.

Jeffrey, do you know how much the Ombre is going for? Looks like the Alexa coat is $450. That's no plastic bag!
