Has anyone wired up an SD442 for the Red yet? I own the SD302 and love it, but think that I'd like to take advantage of all four of Red's audio channels.

If anyone has, I know the 442 can output all four discrete channels, but can it separately control individual gain on all four as well?

Yes because the direct ouputs are post of the input processing. Check out the user guide. I also have a 302 and was thinking I'm might upgrade down the road.

Note that only the small gain trim knobs are active on the 4 direct outputs. The big fader knobs are inactive.

I think I would prefer two 302's or mix-pre's instead as that enables you to use the big faders and the peak meters on the mixer.

That might be good on paper but not sure how practical it'll be. Things like monitoring may also be a pain. Cooper CS104 does what you want.

This is because, like 99% of direct outs on mixers, they are post-preamp but pre-everything else; so you have no EQ or level or pan control over the signal; just preamp.

What you need is a simple device that's four single channel mixers in one box. I don't know if anyone makes one!

But can't you get the four channels out without using the four miniXLR "Direct Outs"? On the other side of the unit there are two full XLRs and two minis, aren't those four channels outputs after all the processing?

The way the 442 is configured you can have the 4 prefade iso outs (controlled by the small knobs which are the input trims), and whatever mix you want to make on the two main output channels using the larger channel faders. Keep in mind that a change to the small faders also changes the levels running to the mix bus via the big ones as well. In any case, the 442 is not a 4-bus mixer, it is a two bus mixer with direct outs. I think what you'd really like is a four bus mixer w/ 4 mix outs. Although I bet they will be coming soon, they don't exist yet as small ENG type mixers. Keep in mind that the cabling to send and return 4 buses to and from a camera means you'd need an 8 channel snake--a bigger hose and a bigger connector than what we've been used to. All those outputs on the right side of the 442 are multiples of the same mix (for feeding 2 chan to several recorders or cameras).

Several have spoken highly of the limiter in the 442. Does anyone know if all the Sound Devices mixers match this quality in the 442? I'm specifically interested in the MIXPRE if this is the case.

All summing inside the mixer is done to 2 channels, using the fader and the pan knob.

The stereo Master output XLRs and the multipin hirose, have high quality transformer based balanced outputs. The TA3 stereo output is the same signal but with impedance balancing.
