  1. #1 Noise Reduction & Resolve - preferred workflow & tools
Say you've got a bunch of high-iso MX material you need to clean up. It's essential to the story, well shot other than being quite grainy. Call it ISO 3200 or 6400.

What's your preferred method to degrain? Any difference in workflow for maintaining details vs skin tone? Favourite 3rd party plugins or external tools?

Neat Video or the Foundry's new noise reduction are the absolute best I've found.

You have to export, de-grain, then bring back into Resolve. Resolve makes this quite easy - just render out a flat pass.

The trick is getting it to round trip with timecode. DPX files work but are... large. EXRs work better but After Effects by default loses the timecode - you need to get ProEXR in order to get After Effects to export with timecode (the guy has done a clever hack for this).

I will put up a workflow guide on Tom's Timescapes thread but at the moment am crunched for time at work.

MCTemporalDenoise, configured correctly, is far and away the best denoiser out there. It can be so good it is almost magical. Quite tricky to configure properly though, it lacks a GUI and your mileage may vary. That said, even the presets remove as much noise and leave behind much more actual detail than Neat Video. Also, it is not just a denoiser but a full blown post processor script.

Looks like MCTemporalDenoise is Windows-only (via AviSynth). Know of any way to use this on a Mac?

Sure would be nice to have something inside Resolve that avoided a round-trip (staying close to the "metal" of the RAW R3D). Hey plugin coders... Make it happen! :)

BTW, I assume you have tried Resolve's own NR, right?

It has the huge advantage of being realtime, plus you can apply it to only a specific region, you can see it in the context of your grade, etc.

I'm looking to push the envelope a little beyond the built-in NR. I have a project coming up where i know there'll be some particularly challenging (low light) shooting scenarios, so I'm trying to plan ahead and take a look at what's out there.

Being able to mask regions for content would be another advantage of a plugin inside Resolve.

Are you referring to F_DeGrain or F_DeNoise? I thought there wasn't AE support for Foundry plugins?

Recently I've finished TVC shot on RED ONE M at ISO800, Had a lot of noise in grading but after Resolve I used MB Denoiser in AE and I'm very happy with it.

Sorry, but MB Denoiser doesn't come close to Neatvideo, leaving alone MCTemporalDenoise.

I'm referring to the new one in NukeX 6.3.
