If I were to record 1920 x 1080 thru the hdmi while recording 4K, would it be possible to make all my edits in Premiere 5.5 using this low resolution format, perform any cropping, etc. - and then somehow apply these edits to the 4K in Premiere?

I'm very new to Premiere 5.5 on Win7 (and hopefully a Scarlet user soon), having come from Final Cut Pro 7.

    Thanks!

I believe the Mercury playback engine will allow you to edit 4K .r3d RAW files without transcoding in Premiere Pro CS5.5 (even on a mid-grade machine). I believe you have the choice of 1/2 and 1/4 resolution. You would need a RED Rocket if you want to edit 4K in real time. You just right click in the program window and select the resolution playback.

In following your suggestion of an offline/online workflow... I am not sure how you would relink the 1080p to 4K... would the HDMI offload build the same metadata structure that is being generated in the REDCODE file based workflow?

I'm not that familiar with Premiere yet, but they just bought Automatic Duck, so they are focusing on using XML that would contain start/stop ediit points , cropping, etc. (I would guess)

I thought that this XML could be applied from one sequence to another?

Hopefully, if I get the video card I want, the Mercury engine will suffice, but ... just curious about other options. I realize this may be totally un-workable (or undesirable) for other reasons - and as the video cards increase in power, probably not even necessary. But, just checking.

If your edit machine is fairly decent with Cuda enabled GFX card, then simply create a 1K sequence (or 2K if you prefer) or an HD 1920x1080, and edit with your 4k files, when finished, create a 4K or any format sequence, copy and paste your edit to the new sequence - done.

Or even more simply - just use a 4k sequence the whole time and playback at a resolution that runs in real time.

For some info on working with RED in Premiere have a look at these tutorials I made Les. Tutorials 2 and 3 will probably help you out the most.
