    I see 'client login' on a lot of animation/video production houses' websites. What doe this generally serve as?

    It's a password protected login area so that they can see and/or download shots that have been posted for them.

    Clients don't want their work to be seen until they have approved it and its time for their intended release. So if you are going to use the web for them to review material, you have to have a protected way to do that.
