Let me get this straight Paolo, when you say you'll go to "LA" is that LA as in LOUISIANA, or LA as in L.A. = Los Angeles.

If you go to Los Angeles, California and then pick up the camera from Red in Orange County, then I think you'll have to pay taxes even if you plan on shipping to Maryland.

I remember when we bought or equipment from Arizona, we went to the company and paid them, but we never took possession of our equipment, we had THEM ship it out of state, and that saved us from paying the taxes.

I think as long as you don't take possession you could be fine, but I'm not 100% sure on the California laws, but I think if you have Red ship the camera to a Maryland address you won't have to pay California taxes if I'm correct.

Anyone else have any input on this state sales tax issue?

    Hi Omnius,
    thanks for your reply.
Yes, LA as Los Angeles. I`m planning to go there check the Red, pick up the right accessories and then flying back to Italy. The news that i have to pay california taxes added to the euro taxes caught me off guard. Hence, the fact i can avoid Cali taxes having it shipped elsewhere in the US is a possibility. I thought this was the case just for some states, that`s why i asked if Maryland too (my brother lives there) was running the same policies as Arizona.

    Best wishes to you too,

    Paolo

    Paolo,

Would be interested to see the comparative costs involved of shipping the kit to another state plus your expenses to follow it vs shipping the camera direct from the factory.

Would you want to see and test your camera at the factory or could they already have shipped yours out of state so it is waiting for you?

    Hi John,

with all respect, but I don't get your point with your "LOL" here.

Have you ever bought CMOS imaging sensors from a fab?
I did. And they ALWAYS come packed with magnificient shielding bags. Nothing to compare with a PCI card bag or the like. This stuff is really massive - and they have good reasons for this. And they do this for the airplane transport reasons.

Other companies experienced issues with damaged sensor pixels when delivering them by airplane. A series of very populart prosumer cams comes with a build-in recalibration, that allows detecting of bad pixels after airplane travels by their technicians. As a result a bad pixel table will be used to interpolate neighbor pixels and compensate for the issue. A common trick.

If you ever encounter a damaged sensor due to this kind of problems you may want to have shielding...

A company needs proof of export, thats how it is in EU to get off the VAT/state tax.
I assume its the same in the US.
If you drink a beer at delivery with your supplier and they give it to you without applying state tax, they are probably making a mistake which might lead them to pay the missing bucks back upon tax audit.
You might claim it back from US customs if you prove export.

  6. #36 Cosmic rays
    Hi Axel,

The only thing that will stop the most energetic of radiation is a couple of hundred feet of rock. Lower energy radiation is stopped by less dense material. Interestingly when cosmic ray hits lead it creates an xray.
The atmosphere stops some, so the higher you are the more radiation.

There is a interesting discussion here in regard to RED cmos and Cosmic and Gamma radiation.

Jim J, this company have just invented an interesting low cost material designed to stop Cosmic and Xray damaging chips. It can be applied as a sheet or in tape or paint form.....

Have a cosmic ray free Christmas everyone...!

What would be really, really nice, is if the camera could be shipped by Red in a Peli Case (with the template laser-cut packing I hear Jim had cut for his batch). The first thing I'll buy for the camera is a Peli Case anyway, so if Red can offer it as a "shipping option" (ie UPS'd in Peli Case) I'll sign up to that.

I know quite a few folk have stated that they want to cut the foam to fit their own layout to fit other gear, but frankly from my standpoint I hate cutting the packing foam, and I always stow accessories in a second case, so a pre-cut case would be perfect for me.

And has anybody worked out what the EU (UK specifically) import tax will be? I know for "cameras" alone there are 7 or 8 tax bands (digital, film, motion digital, motion film, motion digital with A/V in and so on) ranging from 3.5% through to 14.8%. Throw lenses into the equation, and the tax is all over the place.

I know I took 3 Red One bodies in a standard 20" carry on with 1" of foam between each to IBC in September. Most people I know take the bodies in their carry-on cases including Soderberg's assistant cameraman. It makes good sense to carry the body with you on the plane and let the accessories travel in the baggage hold. You can get more accessories but it is difficult to replace the body. I have no suggestion about taxes and duties but keeping the main bodies with you at all times is a common thread with many Red owners.

Count me in on the Peli Case. Its on the list anywhere. I hardly knew anything better, so why would one not want one for shipping the body. We'll for sure have a second one for the grip, but the body, the minimum battery pack (loader plus 2 batteries, maybe more) and potentially a lense, thats what I expect to travel in a basic Peli Case. If there is room for more, no complaints :)

I hope someone at RED is reading these lines before they call me (and I am way on top of the list with #110...).

Btw, was it a rumor or can we have names engraved in the bodies along with the serial numbers?
If yes, is that an extra costs or how is this handled?
Or had they been engraved in the CF modules instead?

    Some help appreciated here!

    Merry Christmas to everybody,
    Axel
