Thanks for the update, Mitch. That is awesome news about the flicker fix. If Sony fixes it so I can run flicker-free at 24fps, I'm buying both a 25 and a 17.... Maybe. Will have to see them first. ;)

I saw one running at the local F65 demo earlier in the week here in Toronto. The flicker made it un-watchable. Hard to comment on the rest without a good known reference to go with it - all I could see what the flicker.

Perhaps a Red 4K OLED display in 2012 could make things right?

When you turn one of these monitors on the only way to tell its on is with the start up screen and the green power light after... the blacks are black.

The BVM series does not flicker, but you pay for it. The BVM has a lot more features than the PVM. I own a PVM 17" and I have been on set and worked with a 24.5" BVM. They are going to be the new standard for reference. Absolutely incredible. But the flicker on the PVM @ 24 frames is bad, however if you feed it non 24 frame material it doesn't flicker.

I am interested to see how the firmware update fixes the issue. They say it smears the video a bit, but no more than a LCD so we shall see I guess

Curtis, you'd think Sony, at the launch of the F65 here in Toronto could have got the BVM so we wouldn't see flicker.... I didn't take a picture of the monitors to see what version they were, but the flicker on them was so objectionable. No reason a monitor should flicker at any frame rate especially given how long Sony have been making 24p cameras and broadcast monitors.

I totally agree Graeme, I don't understand why they released monitors that flicker at 24 either. I have been told its because they were built like they built the old CRT reference monitors and they flickered at 24. So they build a board that eliminated the flicker but cost $5k so thats why its in the BVM series and not the PVM.

No idea of why they would have done a demo with the F65 and a PVM monitor is beyond me. If you are trying to showcase a camera show it the best you can right?

I have worked on a TV show shooting on F35s and the DP uses a BVM as his monitor and its absolutely stunning no flicker.

But the flicker on the PVM is definitely not acceptable. I used it on a Phantom job recently and that causes all kinds of confusion since you are worried about flicker from lights on the Phantom to begin with. So I hope this firmware update eliminates the problem.

The other solution is to use a up/down/cross converter to switch the signal to 60i. I haven't tried this, but have heard this eliminates the flicker issue.

Also Graeme, I heard someone mention there is possibly going to be a firmware update for the Epic to send out something other than 24 to help with this issue. Is that true?

You tell me Curtis - it was a shoddy demonstration for sure, and some of the poorest camera demo footage I've ever seen coupled with a 1.5hr powerpoint that terminally boring. Duno on firmware, but funny that RED would be asked to fix a Sony monitor issue though :-)

I remember seeing you at NAB this year, did you get a chance to goto the Sony booth and see the F65 demo footage there? I thought it was pretty solid stuff. Did they show something different at the recent demo you attended?

Yeh, the NAB demo was pretty decent. But the presenter said he didn't like that demo so he wasn't showing it.
