    Hi,

I have a samourai and a Pix 240. Did not try them very much but i can do some tests if you want. I bought these two recorder for 2 camera. Today, i like the 2 and can not say wich one i should have choose.

The + for the samourai :
    weight and batteries +++
    price
    the company that goes quick

The - for the samourai :
    the screen (really awfull)
the Red informations through hdsdi (at this time)
    no sound monitoring

The + for the pix :
    the big sound device quality
    the screen
    the ambient clock inside
    HD SDI AND hdmi
    the great great great sound
the company that goes quick too

    The - for the pix 240 :
    the weight

If i had to make a choice today ? Sorry, I don't know... If the purppose is just recording (and i firmware of the samourai groth up), the samourai could be my choice. If you need a second monitor on field, audio recorder, clock for synchro, (and others), the PIX is for you. So I have to use them both to have a better opinion.

Is anyone having trouble getting an image into their Samurai from EPIC? I just got one and the image (whether recording or monitoring) is messed up as if it were set for the wrong timecode. But as I change the EPIC between 23.98 and 24p, the Samurai seems to be adjusting accordingly. (have tc set to HD-SDI). Maybe I'm missing something simple. I have put in two tickets to Atomos on their website and no reply for days. Here's a video showing what the image I'm getting looks like: http://web.me.com/lostmanscreek/Site_96/Samurai.html

We ordered an Atomos Samurai for our Scarlet, and the performance was great for the first six hours on set. Footage played back flawlessly. We were on setup #9, our AC was setting up the rig, and suddenly, the Samurai showed 0k on disk. Trying not to panic, we checked and rechecked... then we panicked. We had lost the last six hours of shooting - no warning, nothing. The SSD was suddenly unformatted. Luckily, we'd been recording to the Samurai as a backup and an offline edit - and everything had been recorded on our Scarlet media.

We unplugged it, sent it back and bought a Pix.

What Atomos firmware are you running? It should be at least 2.8.

    @ Bob

I have a job coming up where I'm needing dailies to an editor cutting on FCP 7. I was thinking of dual recording onto Red SSD and Samurai as the Pro res recorder. ( BTW it's amazing how FCP 7 a unloved piece of software by apple is still highly used in the industry ).

Anyway given I last posted on this thread sometime ago I was wondering if you could maybe give a short update where Atomos is with compatability & Scarlet ? This job is happening in the next month . Thanks In advance.

Well, RED will hopefully have there firmware update on monday which will allow a proper raster through the SDI. Atomos has not released 3.0 yet. It was supposed to be released April30th. I would hope any day now for it though. Fingers crossed for both of these next week.

I got this response from Atomos about the 3.0 release.

"AtomOS 3.0 is in final preparation and testing stages, we expect this to be released mid-May but may be subject to change.

We are sorry we missed our release date and will keep registered users up to date with news."

I have gone through 2 Samurais and both failed to work properly with first my Red One then my new Epic. Has anyone got a Samurai working with an Epic? My new Samurai recorded images initially but the HDSDI trigger would turn it on but not turn it off. Then the second time I used it images became broken up on screen and the recorded images had instabilities. I tried it on another video camera with 108050i and the same problem. I have given up and returned it.
