Is there any truth in Philip Bloom's statement that the 3K and 2K resolutions are too noisy and blocky, due to the cropping, and therefore unusable?

Short answer No, and Yes.

3k is totally fine (by my standards), 2kWS has improved with the latest firmware, but it isn't the epitome of sharpness and resolution because it's 2048x854 pixels.

i have been misquoted. i have not shot 3k. only 2k and it does have issues with strange artefacts in the blacks. This was even talked about at Reducation Uk and that it would be improved in future firmware. I have not shot 2k at 24p only high frame rates so no idea if that makes a difference.
