This is great news, because I want a camera that won't run home crying when I ask it to do something insane - and that means pro gear. If I have to stack a few more pennies, whatever, I need good tools. Bring it! I'm ready.

To your point: Philip Bloom + $600 Camera = http://vimeo.com/31064478
No one Needs a $6K camera - they Want it
There are those who Need a $50K camera - that is commercial / pro level turf where hacks and equipment overdrives don't cut it
hey Steve, your gentle take on the tools not being the art is well taken and right on. Picasso (if you regard him as an artist of merit, which many do, and not as the clown he declared himself) had a "blue period" as that was the only pigment (the least expensive) he could afford. Not a few would say these blue period paintings are among his greatest and most human. I, at one point, as a really young guy, owned a then "obsolete" camera, an Eclair NPR that no less an artist-filmmaker than John Cassavetes (much underrated IMHO) used to make his film FACES which is a classic of American cinema. There are great race car drivers who drove brilliantly the cars of their day. Jean Renoir managed to make a still great film and even advance camera movement as an expressive element of cinema with a rig that would make an Alexa look like a pocket point and shoot with Rules of the Game.
In general our culture is obsessed with technology as the means to an end. But form has to be married with content, and style is not all. (Although often passes as such.)
I don't think even Jim embraces the Red as a required tool to artistry, while being a genius that has the vision to "democratize" quality so that as many present and future cinematic artists -- and content providers artistic and commercial, can afford the finest canvas and a multitude of pigments. It is a great tool. But it will not salvage a mediocre blueprint or a mundane vision. It will just make it "look" better than it is.
And remember, what is a reality now was hardly even a dream of possibility a mere decade ago. If your game is beautiful imagery, it has never been more within reach with less compromise. I feel I was born too soon.
So I guess what JIM is trying (or not trying) to say is that Scarlet is a PRO-B-CAM
(anyone who knows me feel free put a bullet through my head)

Most likely it will and most likely I will get one. Many are waiting for a $50,000 camera for $10,000 and others are waiting for a $15,000 camera for $6000. And almost everybody is waiting for the surprise big sensor, interchangeable lens, 4-5K announcement for $6,000. In essence an Epic for $6,000.00! There are so many variables and expectations. Just a few more days.Scarlet is going to be great.
I think what Jim is saying is that the Scarlet will remain a 2/3" camera, being a full professional camera with full professional specs to cover this area of the market. Anyone who wants full frame will have to get an Epic (I can't imagine how the Epic can compete with the Scarlet otherwise, unless the Scarlet goes full frame but remains 3K?).
4k for 12-15 grand? Maybe 10...
Don't even remember since how many years I'm monitoring this forum every day (actually several times a day).
It keeps getting more and more exiting to watch all of this happening almost in reel time (well, of course Red team is few steps ahaed, but Jim has such hard time to keep things secret).
Nov. 3rd is going to be a blast... Regardless of the Scarlet final version, it's already a great web event... Did some people really said this whole Red thing was a scam?
I like the passion around here!
I'm curious why Epic hasn't been subject to repeated price increases like Scarlet.
Not going to judge until the actual announcement but I'm guessing this means I can't afford one. If I'm honest with myself the LAST price increase probably meant that, but I don't wanna give up...
