Oh man, one of those things, yeah maybe. But they are still way cheaper. It's more like AlienWare pre-made kits to be on par with Apple upcharge. I mean the way I've always owned PC's, I buy all the parts on New Egg and build them and replace parts incrementally for years. But I'm talking about for a gaming machine. For real work where I have to use the computer as a user, I always use Macs. Apple because I want to, PC because that's the only option depending on the use. But I can't help but think you could take a premade HP or Dell and still swap all the parts from NewEgg for a long time.

But again, if someone likes the image and experience of a more expensive camera- just Like a Mac - It's worth the extra cost for some people to pay for the premium experience even if they get boned on replacing large parts of it in the future (you keep buying Mac's right?). We do get paid after all to turn in images, not to tell the client how cool the thing breaks into interchangeable parts and how much money we save on upgrades or how many more pixels of resolution are avail if they ever feel like using them someday. I will agree with you though that the design of the DSMC system is absolutely fantastic and is what made me buy an EPIC-M in the first place. They should be given huge kudos for it. But ironically I'm (really the buyer is) getting boned so far trying to sell it. And that kind of kills any joy or love I have over this whole thing. It's a lose/lose/lose for me/buyer/Red. I hope the buyer isn't soured on Red before he even gets to appreciate what he's getting :(

Actually... 80k for the codec box on top of the ALEXA to shoot ARRI RAW... plus 80k for Camera... Quick math... makes it.... $130,000 dollars more than the EPIC and
you only get 2.8k RAW res at a max 30fps...

Compared to 5k RAW at 120 FPS... for a little as $40,000... mmmm.... when you look at it like this, you have to worry about the sanity of people purchasing the ARRI.

O well... you have to share the money around I suppose... All's good on earth :)))))

Well in the couple times a year you want the higher res than 1080 for an FX shoot you rent a RAW box. I seriously doubt any ARRI owners would buy a Codex box only to rarely use it. And 120fps is 4k, yes? My former EPIC only did 96fps at 5K. Personally I wish I could use the whole sensor size at 120fps and only turn in an 1080 file. The Alexa does that (yes with a $2500 upgrade). Again, to each his own. Everyone's needs are different. Me nor my clients rarely ever need more than 1080 (we shoot tv spots) but I DO always need the entire sensor utilized up to 120fps. If I want the 3.5k once or twice a year I'll rent the box for a few hundred bucks. Also, quote apple's to apple's. Alexas are not 80k. They are far cheaper. It's all the add ons that make a full kit 80k. My EPIC-M was 60k (58 for kit plus 2k worth of extra stuff to complete it). You are loosely comparing an EPIC-X body vs a full Alexa kit price.

Ha ha! 1080p is only "good enough" until they release a 4K camera.

Exactly what I am also after. And a while back Jim was promising just such a feature on the Epic. He called it 1080FF.
It is not currently available in the menu. But it is only a matter of time...

Unless he has changed his mind again????

On the subject of which... I wish there was a single thread which listed what features will be added to Epic, and which of the original features have now been left out permanently.

I am sure there would be....if they knew themselves what will be enabled and when.

Playback is the biggest need right now I feel and everything else is taking a backseat for now.

It seems the Epic is a monster to enable features on. Its probably the biggest problem with building such a powerful complicated Camera.

Something that concerns me, is stories of people with some main board malfunction that sounds like it might be minor that send in the camera and receive back a $6000 repair bill, which sounds like the price of a new replacement board with some very expensive near military grade fpgas on it (not saying that I know what current models use). For the Scarlet, in particular, will there be cheap options for refurbished replacement of boards as some sort of extended+ warranty?

    Thanks.
