It must be something bigger valued for less money that they can sell for tens of thousands and then earn their salaries.

    And what it could be?

4K, 120fps, small, lightweight, PL/Canon EF mounts, HDMI/HD-SDI and playback from day one enabled, accessories compatible with Epic...

All for about $12,000 (body only)!

    No more backorders...

    Am I kidding again?

I am really hoping for three things; 4K Resolution 10-12-14 MP Digital Stills Camera (please I don't want to bring a 7D with me on every shoot) Interchangeable lens with at least one Red Electronic Lens available at shipping.
Electronic lens are going to be great. Auto focus, Racking, Face Detection, Run and Gun, Indi Film, Jib / Festival / Concert / TV / Web Streaming the market will be huge.
When the wireless streaming module arrives it's going to change everything.

Jim mentioned in a post that 1080/2K is not enough. Which seems to suggest that 3K might be enough. BUT I really think 4K should be the baseline for RED. I really think it'll dilute the argument to bring in Scarlet at 3K. Plus, standardizing on 4K will allow Scarlet/EPIC to be used together on set and share exactly the same post workflow.

Hopefully, the lower price comes in another way.

When your opposition is reacting to what you are doing, you are winning. So many large companies reacted to Apple's iPod and not a one could release a competitive MP3 player to push back the iPod. Not a single one. All the while, Apple stuck to its guns and did not themselves react to new competition. They sailed a steady course, full speed ahead, both at the same time.

When Steve Jobs demonstrated the iPhone in January 2007, some people didn't believe that a small gadget could do all that cool stuff.

Nobody gave established players a mandate for anything. Whether Apple or Sony or RED or Canon, nobody has a mandate. Market leadership has to be earned. Smaller players can out-manoeuvre larger ones. Uruguay is a much smaller nation than England and yet has two World Cup victories to England's one. Cool, huh?

I may not be a RED customer for a while (shooting movies is not my industry). But, my goodness, I love this company!

EDIT: I predict a 16:9 sensor, regardless of physical dimensions.

I hope purchasing and package options will be announced right at bat on the 3rd. That way we have that hour to figure out what we want so when everything goes live on the store we can just go in and pull the trigger without spending a whole lot of time looking at the shelves...

What's going to be really interesting is where exactly Scarlet fits in and at what pricepoint. There was some great discussion about this on the RC podcast this week. Is it still a 2/3" chip camera? Is it now a S35 camera? 3K or 4K? These are all reasonable configurations that are below Epic spec (and surely things like framerates will be lower as well), but if you start pushing it up too much and it starts hitting the $12K-$15K price range then you lose a lot of the indie crowd for which I believe have been the hungriest for this product since it was announced. Features are awesome, but price is super important too. You already have the best digital cinema product (with the most features) available with the Epic... so how do you decide what to trim with the Scarlet? My guess is RED doesn't even know what the final specs are going to be. It's quite a game, but it sure is an exciting one.
Totally agree. Its going to be interesting to see what RED do with the spec.

So the decreeing differences, I would guess, would be on Resolution, Dynamic Range, HDRx, REDcode and interchangeable lenses.

Scarlet has to be less specced than EPIC from a business prospective and priced accordingly.

This is what's leading to the anticipation - what we are all doing here. Guessing. Which we know can be dangerous as we all guess and then someone thinks it's fact (I've done that myself before).

I think the price point will based in line with where RED think this product belongs. Do they price aggressively and aim for the Indie market where their would be a huge take up but probably limited return on investment, or go slightly high and market out some people.

Jim always makes the point that to really own any sort of equipment like this, you have to look at your Return on Investment and he'll be doing the same with the spec vs price point. I wouldn't be surprised if they make a final decision 5 minutes before the release the details :-)

In my eyes, the EPIC is a steal for the price, even if you add on the additional support kit. Canon's announcement is only going to help all of us as consumers and customers. Jim's been looking for a fight for a while and it looks like he's going to get his own way (as he always does) ;-)

One thing is for sure, Nov 3rd is going to be a major wake up call and a very interesting day/night.

    :-)

    Guys, relax:)
When Canon done something revolutionary for their clients?:) Only 5d Mark and so it was accidentally:)
Then 24p and manual focus after 1 year:)
I think Canon as a Sony f65 do it under pressure because all line Cinealta has became scrap metal after Epic is realesed!:)
And Canon 5D Mark will be scrap metal after realesed Scarlet so Canon want to save face before Scarlet released and according to placee of release - Hollywood it must be 4K camera for arround 5 000 USD otherwise it will be the shame!:)

I believe Canon will match specs to specs with RED & overall their biggest bet is on the glasses they were experience in building which still Red is lacking on Lenses. Other than that I appreciate a CEO so excited about other product launch on same day their product is launched.

I am expecting Steve Jobs kind of Keynote Presentation from JIM to get people's attention and also on development of Scarlet based on user experience rather than just buiding competing camera and accessories.

    Hope Jim got my point!
    Thanks

Now, what JIM should do, is record his mini Keynote on Scarlet and release the video at 6pm PST so we are all downloading the same video - then do Q&A on REDuser - that would be sooooo cool.
