    Hi All,

I was playing around with an Epic the other day and was trying to figure out how to create LUTs/Look Presets to store on the Epic, based off quick grades/looks made in RC-X...

Since RedColor 2 is one of the viewing options on Epic, I would have thought that I could save a look from RC-X using RedColor 2/RedGamma 2, but when I tried to "save current look to camera," I got an error message saying that RedColor/RedGamma had to be used in order for this function to work. I assume this is a legacy matter for use with the R1, though it would be great if there was an override option for using this feature with Epic.

How are people saving look presets on their Epic? I'm sure it's possible to adjust all the variables in camera and then saving it, but sometimes it's easier to manipulate an image with a GUI like RC-X. I've also found that oftentimes WYSIWYG does not apply from on-camera monitoring to post, so I'm hoping building looks in RC-X for in-camera use will be a viable option in the near future.

Any other methods I should be aware of? Your thoughts and input are appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Clint

Epic supports loading looks from RMD files.

    Three steps:
    1. Get the look you want on an existing clip. Make sure "Automatically Save RMDs" is on in the preferences.
    2. Right-click on the clip in the bin/browser and select "Show RMD in Folder". Copy the RMD to the drive you're using for the Epic.
    3. In the Epic UI, select Presets - Import/Export - RMD Preset, choose the RMD file, and hit Apply.

Alternatively, to create an RMD from a look preset, select Edit - "Export Selected..." in the Look Presets panel of RCX.

    Hi there...
I've given it a try, and the only parameters that seem to stick are color/ contrast/ brightness.
If I merely adjust the curve in Redcine X, the look does not seem to carry back to the camera via the RMD.
    Thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Harry

Thanks for chiming in, Grant and Harry. I'd love to hear more on this.

Harry - Forgive me for any ignorance, as I've only had a very limited amount of time working closely with the Epic...but is there a checkbox to apply a curve in the Epic menus, similar as the Red One menu?

A general question related to Harry's findings: is there a way to select additional parameters of a look to be applied via RMD?

Grant - With regards to saving RMDs and bringing them over to the Epic...can you rename RMDs in the OSX finder window as a means to differentiate one from another? And if so, will the Epic read them as such? It'd make it very easy for having multiple looks saved in the camera. Also, are these looks saved on the Epic via some internal memory? It would be dreadful to have to keep loading particular RMDs as you swap out media, particularly over the course of long-form projects.

Any other methods people find useful?

    Thanks for the input!

    Best,
    Clint

There is a "Curve" submenu within the Look menu, but it's merely a pulldowm with Redgamma 2.
No way I can see to manually input a curve.
I'm sure all of this functionality will be enabled at some point...
When I got my first original Red One, I think it was Build 13. No sound, and I think no playback. Look how far they have pushed that platform! Big things to come I am sure.
    Cheers,
    Harry

Hi Clint, yes, you can rename the RMDs before putting them on the Epic drive.

You won't have to keep loading the RMDs when you swap out drives: you can save them onto the Epic's internal memory by creating a Preset with the Image field selected.

Agreed! It's so nice to have a handful stored that you can quickly switch between... Once you can effectively select which parameters carry over from RC-X to Epic (and then match when you bring new footage back over), it's going to be an incredible feature...one of many on an incredible camera! I'm excited for the future, and the future is here.

    Cheers,
    Clint

Thought I'd give this a bump.
Is there anything I'm missing on the camera?
The only settings created in RCX that seem to transfer to the camera are color/ contrast/ brightness.
Am I doing something wrong or is full functionality of RMD application to the camera coming in a future build?
    Cheers,
    Harry

Lift, Gamma, Gain is not supported in camera yet. That will come later.
