is it possible to build a box with like 5 or 6 bays that has its own RAID 5 controller? something that stands alone?

    I use two Sonnet D500P raid 0.
One of them is the back-up with CopyCloner.

Thinking of changing the discs to 3TB for having 15TB per enclosure.
Can you recommend any specific discs?
If Hitachi. Can I use the HDS line or do I have to pay the double for HUA enterprice class?

I don't understand the practical difference. Life expectancy, but it's more likely that I will change them for yet a bigger one, before I wear the out...

    Thanks

The main difference between the two are the vibration and heat tolerance they are built to. RAIDS tend to run hotter and because of all the spinning disks the vibrations tend to be higher HUA drives are built to withstand these better than a normal desktop drive is.

You can easily get away with using HDS Drives but the chance of failure is higher if you have them in a big raid that might not have the best cooling...

Personally I almost always use the HUA drives, because when they fail i can warranty them out one of the things your paying that higher price for, I find in the longrun that it saves me money.
