  1. #1 3CP Image Control
Just wondering if anyone here is using the new 3cP iPad app on set and how's it's working for them. I'm really curious if it works with DaVinci Resolve and if so what that workflow is like. Would you have to bring footage into Resolve, export a RAW still, bring that into IC on the iPad, time it then export the CDL back into DaVinci? Also, would this all run without an Internet connection, just a wifi network?

Sorry for all the questions, I have sent a message to 3cP but haven't gotten a response yet and am anxious to find out if this would work for my next show.

    Hey Ryan,

Thanks for your interest in 3cP / Image Control Pro. Just replying to your email on here as well.

QUESTION: How does the monitor calibration on the iPad work? Does it require one of your charts? I'm guessing there is no probe, so is it just set off bars on the iPad?

ANSWER: The calibration is done internally on the iC application and it uses our own proprietary chart. It does work with the iPad1 but obviously the performance is significantly better on the iPad2.

QUESTION: How am I able to load in a still from a Red MX in the RedGamma2/RedColor 2 space? I am currently using DaVinci Resolve to do all my color grading on set. Do I need to copy all the footage first, bring the footage into DaVinci then save a frame grab in the chosen gamma and color space to grade on the iPad? or is there a short cut?

ANSWER: Still images can be loaded into Image Control in many different ways. First is if you have a copy of 3cP SET+POST desktop software which allows you to import video footage, then capture still images to be sent to Image Control. Another way would be to email still frames to your iPad. We do not suggest “syncing” images via iTunes since it adjusts the gamma and “optimizes” the image too much. We will also have some other options available soon so that you do not need a copy of 3cP SET+POST. Just keep in mind that on the iPad you will not be grading an .r3d file, but rather a still image. The iPad does not support that file type so we are having to work under a non .r3d workflow. You can however import .r3ds into 3cP SET+POST.

QUESTION: How does the LUT input process work with DaVinci Resolve? First how does the LUT get transfered? Does it work with a WiFi connection between the MacPro and iPad without an internet source? And when I input it into DaVinci am I able to select it like a powergrade or frame grab?

ANSWER: Image Control or 3cP SET + POST can export a .cube file for the DaVinci Resolve. This will be for primaries only though. You simply email the LUTs/CDLs from the iPad to a dedicated email address. Or if you own 3cP you can send the settings back to that via WIFI network and export the LUT/CDL from the desktop solution.
