I, like most of you, cannot wait for the Scarlet to be released. I refuse to spend money to get a camera that is not the Scarlet. But what would be the camera most like the scarlet as far as features. Of course it won't be 3k or REDcode RAW, but which camera would you say is the most like a Scarlet. Consider price, quality, and workflow.

    There quite simply isn't one.

Ditto, unless your considering another RED camera... they really are in a league of their own right now.

Probably JVC's recently announced 4k 1/2 sensor'd fixed lens cam.. I suspect every other company will flood the market shortly thereafter with 4k cams as it will be replacing "HD" as the new buzzword and next level standard. Supposedly it will come in at around $6k.. Both don't exist right now.

Hopefully I don't kill myself before Scarlet comes out ;)

    I love RED.

Red Scarlet is very unique on workflow and image quality, but with price unknown...

the prototype JVC 4K camcorder I saw had poor low light performance
and consumer video image quality and codec- that's it's achilles heel.

It's OK for "video" use outside with plenty of light, but indoors it's pretty useless
    on it's own...

Once you see the JVC Image quality, resolution will be the last thing on your mind...
I would best describe the image quality as consumer video HD, certainly not cinematic.

I assume the Scarlet RAW footage could be adjusted to intercut with Sony EX-1/3 or good Panasonic AF100/ Sony FS100 1080p footage,
but not easily the other way around...

Best other option would be to rent Red...

Only camera that comes to mind as being "similar to Scarlet" is the SI2k. 2/3" CMOS, RAW capability, compact.....granted, it needs to be tethered to a PC. Nice system overall.

I have heard a lot about Silicon Imaging's SI2k. Seems to me that would be one of the closest. What would be your thoughts for lenses for the Scarlet? RED Mini Primes or different?

Still... the SI2K will only do 30fps @ 2K... and cost more... and that's without lenses if I'm not mistaken.

Kyle: first response, best response. There simply isn't one.

I am personally very interested to see how Scarlet 2/3" does versus current similar priced (or lower-priced) larger sensor cameras and DSLRs in terms of :
    - low light performance
    - color rendition

Obviously Scarlet will KRUSH ALL in terms of resolution, frame rate, bit depth, lens data recording, genlock, stereo sync, etc. But if the low light performance is really bad and the color rendition doesn't make things look nice... then I'll take a Scarlet 2 with Dragon Sensor instead, please :)

Current competitor in the same price range would be the Sony FS100? Or how about a GH2 with an external recorder attached?

At the moment I'm playing with a little Nikon D7000 and in low light it is AMAZING. Not exactly what you'd call pixel-for-pixel sharp at 1080p though :)

I am not a fan of the DSLR's overheating issues. And if I got a DSLR I think Ted would come shoot me. :)
