Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

I have received a ton of questions through email over the last couple weeks on the Canon mount. Thought a thread was fitting.

First of all.. Let me introduce he first production Titanium Canon EOS mount that just came off the line today, along with the new lens caps:



-These will start to ship to customers on September 9th.

-Deposits will open on RED.COM in the store in the next couple days. Price for the smart Titanium Canon mount is $2000.

- The Titanium mounts are all machined out of solid Titanium.

-Current EPIC builds all support Iris control over the mount. An early AF build will be released around the time when the mounts ship. This will include basic touchscreen autofocus.

-After release You don't need separate builds for different mounts.. AF support for Canon and Nikon etc. will all be integrated into the " normal " EPIC builds, so you can switch from PL to Canon mount to Nikon mount all with the same camera build.

- Speaking of switching, it is a field safe procedure ( in a clean area ) and literally involves unscrewing 4 bolts and swapping mounts.. Then check back focus ( if needed )

- The Canon lens mount is "SMART" which means it controls camera Iris, Image Stabilization, and Autofocus electronically, via the various control options with EPIC ( touch screen, side handle, REDMOTE )

- A lot of people have emailed about the nature of Canon lenses sometimes being loose in their mounts on their DSLRs. We have added a locking ( as you can see in the photo above ) so you bayonet the lens into the mount as normal, and then rotate the locking to double secure the lens. No more rotation, no more wobble :)

-All lens data available from the lens will be stored in the R3D metadata. There is on screen displays for iris stop, focal length ( including zooms ) and the current focus distance in inches or mm.


-Here is a list of Canon lenses that have been programed into the mount/ Epic Brain. These still need to be characterized for fine-tuned autofocus as they all have different motor speeds etc., but they are and will be functional out of the gate when the Canon mount ships.

Image Stabilization is functional on the entire stabilized lens lineup.

If your lens is not on the list, it's ok, you still will get rudimentary support, such as IRIS control and Stabilization if the lens has it.

I think that this is a very important and powerful feature.


Is the metadata accessed through RC-X?
Can an XML of the metadata be exported?

I believe this ability of a cinema/television camera to take advantage of high quality lightweight electronic still lenses can be a game changer. Opening up a whole range of new possibilities to doco and TV production. Certainly won't be replacing quality PL glass on drama and high end TVC but for alot of production this will be the way to go. I'll be buying one.

I understand the value of AF in finding focus and possibly tracking a subject just as you would on a DSLR but as the system stands can you control the lens with an "external" control as you would with a remote follow focus? Will this require a third party device or is this what the Redmote Pro does?
