In case you missed that, this is a first week of Camp RED 2012 at RED STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD and like a last year we are having so much fun! I´m again back in LA all the way from Prague. For me it´s so awesome to see people from last year.. Marcus is back, of course Ted, Brian and others from RED. I also met lot of new cool people. Some of these kids are also back for second year of camp.

3ALITY TECHNICA is also back with this amazing 3D EPIC rig (last year we had RED ONE rig), kids can also shoot with jib or with this incredible live on-set motion control system with real time image compositing from a green-screen to real set. As a last year we shoot music videos, scripted dramas, 3D scenes and new to this year a "Cooking shows" and the motion control set.

Yesterday, Ted did a short REDucation Lite for kids - that was cool! Lot of really smart kids there! On the end of every day we project the dailies on a big screen at stage one.

During the day I post lot of pictures, updates and videos from Camp RED on my Twitter so you can get a feel how awesome this place is!

This is so cool, my boy will be there in a year or so.
I only wish someone explained to me when I was young that there were other options besides doctor, lawyer etc etc.... no one even talked about the possibility of working in the motion picture business.
Way to start them young Ted.
Im sure we will all be working for one of them soon.

It's been an amazing amount of fun at the first week of Camp RED - summer #2

As Marek mentions above, the Kids are rocking the EPICs with a motion control rig provided by the top Hollywood guys that do this kind of work for the big movies shot on RED, shooting 3D with the same 3Ality Technica Rigs that Hobbit and Spiderman used, doing a 3 Camera cooking show with EPICs and Scarlets, and cutting their own projects with these state of the art, super powered HP computing systems, all cutting native R3Ds like butter - no transcoding, just load the RED RAW 5K files and go to work in the edit bays.

It's truly amazing to watch the kids lock in on the technology so easily, and make great looking images all while just enjoying a summer camp experience.

Our first camp RED movie festival for all the kids and their Parents is in one day, so it's a mad dash to the finish to get all the projects editing completed, color graded and finished for the big screen in time - quite an impressive undertaking for the kids and all the camp RED counselors and tech staff that drive it all so well. Think about shooting a project on EPICs, and turning it around in post in about 2 days time after the shooting (the kids take sports and snow cone breaks too :-) and up on a big movie screen - only a kid that doesn't know he can't do something like that would even attempt it, which is why it's so crazy cool to see it all come together.

The first round of behind the scenes pix of Camp RED are up for the parents, I'll see if I can get the green light to put a few of them up here. It's really fun to see them in action with the camera gear - even though the EPICs are in super small configurations, sometimes the cameras are bigger than the kids that are holding them! :-)

    + Ted

I had just a few minutes today to cut and upload some of the footage from the first day at Camp RED 2012. Some of you already saw it, as I tweeted this few hours ago..

Sadly, I only had my f4.0 zoom lens with me. So the low light footage is really noisy.. sorry for that. But you get the idea, right. :-)

Tomorrow, we will host the first film festival of this year's Camp RED! We are going to see lot of cool projects from the first week.
After the camp, you will probably have a chance to see the projects, as RED might share some of them to public on Vimeo..

I will try to cover the event tomorrow and keep you guys updated.

First week (video of the introduction here) of Camp RED 2012 is behind us.. time to get some rest during the weekend because we are kicking off week no. 2 on Monday!

This week was a blast! We all enjoyed it as much as we could.

Grand finale of this week was the movie festival for all the parents and kids. We got a chance to show more projects on week one then last year. Thanks to the post production guys that worked really hard to get things finished and exported.

Before the screening we had a small dance party going on at stage 1. That was so much fun.

Few hours before the movie festival I decided to grab an EPIC and built little handheld rig so I could shoot all the festival, dancing and everything as a one man crew.

So I took an EPIC and the gunner and built this:

Ok, don't laugh at my microphone mount design.. nothing fancy there.. I just didn't have the parts :-)

At first I had the RED 18mm T1.8 prime on but it was just too heavy for my setup. So I ended up with the lighter RED zoom lens that is f2.8 so I knew I will have to go over ISO 2000 in the theatre. But I think that EPIC holds up pretty well even there thanks to well made sensor and raw images.

I shot the whole thing at 5K 24fps 10:1, brought 3 128GB redmags. Ended up with almost 300GB of 5K footage. I've been running for almost 3 hours with this little thing. In the middle of the festival I ran out of power, but after bit of running around red studios, Brian saved me with another brick.
Shooting with this as a one man crew - pulling the focus, exposure is really challenging as the rig isn't that light - I will definitely get better by next week.. my hands are still shaking after 2 hours.. heh..

I will start editing the footage on Monday, so expect the video around the middle of the week. ;)

The Camp is an amazing place (still 2 weeks in front of us! and we are getting better and better every single day..) and for me.. LA is amazing place. Today I met my awesome friend Emma from last year at camp - that totally made my week (or year?)! I had a ton of fun during the whole week as you might read on my twitter..

Everyone had awesome time there. So once again.. Ted, Brian, Rique huge thanks goes to you!
