I am really thrilled right now.
Back when the first rumors about RED surfaced I was hooked. Back then I was just starting filmschool - in Germany that is.
Since then I started my own Production Company centered around the idea to own an EPIC. First I planned for a Scarlet, but as time and changes went by we realized how great we could use the EPIC and that this is the camera we need.
So after years of yearning to own one of these babies today we finally came up with the resources to finance an EPIC-M! I just sent in the inquiry, so let's hope that we get accepted to the program!
I really really appreciate the RED way of dealing with things. I welcome the changes, the open communication and that they make the damn best cameras in the world for the best prices in the industry. Thank you Jim =)
Also thumbs up for the heads up on the price increase. If only other companies were as friendly and customer-oriented *apple-cough*!

I think I'll go and party now... Wish us luck on our inquiry ;o)

Another +1 for Nikon... happy to use a dumb mount for starters.

Thanks to Red for the continued generosity on pricing!

17K is the RED One crowd. I though the EPIC-S was geared at the upper AF100 crowd.

Hopefully there will also be a window to get one at a lower price.
Thomas - I understand, I'm budgeting for an X right now, and need to pay off the R1 lease/buy ... cover the upgrade cost ... plus, get some addition accessories. So I'm looking
at about $40,000 min right now ... but man, will be the best money ever spent.

But your statement makes me curious whether you're considering that even at 12k estimate it's brain only -- and would probably require another $10-15k AT LEAST for a decent
kit when you throw in the media, EVF or LCD (or both), batteries, etc.

Obviously, it's still a steal when you considered that it's priced around the Sony F3 and how crazily it blows that camera away.

But even if Red sticks to the $12k guess for brain price (which could and probably should change), I would expect to spend $25,000-30,000 for a decent Epic-S package.

Also remember that Epic-S pricing was never "official" like the Stages or M, Jim just gave a rough guess ....

    I just had a thought...

    "EPIC-M brain ............................................. ... $39,500
    EPIC-X Brain ................................ $28,000 .. $35,000"

I predict a serious rush of people who aren't in line for any of the stages and were thinking of buying an X next year saying 'bugger it, I'll just pay 4.5k more and have an M and have it now!' :-)

Dummy side handle is possible... electronic Canon and Nikon mount prices are $2000 for titanium. We couldn't make the aluminum mounts stable enough. Too much flex with longer lenses so we decided not to make them.

I see what you're saying, but if you're really going for EPIC on a seriously tight budget, it can be done: don't forget you can use old RED bits. A tired old brick or two with an adapter cable, an old RED EVF will work, use the SSD->CF adapter and record on old CF cards until you earn enough to afford SSD.

Yes you're limited, but you could make an EPIC-S into a working package for maybe $3-4k on top of the brain price, buying cheap used RED bits - and they will be cheaper as new stuff gets more common, I recently picked up an EVF with a very minor flaw for $1500.

But if the EPIC-S brain price is significantly higher than has been predicted, that would wipe out people on a tight budget.

What can I say? I make a suggestion, CEO responds within the hour. What other company works like this?? Thanks Jim!

Bummer on the mount pricing but I see where you're coming from.

    Exactly. That was my plan.

To get the most basic accessories and use Canon glass.

It seems that I am finally out of the picture. Let's hope Canon makes their S35 camcorder already.

After coming here daily for more than 3 years this is disappointing, but that's life.

Thomas, if this makes you feel better, I just recently priced a very standard Epic-S package and budgeted everything out, and without glass my package price came to be about 25k. That includes everything to get me started and I even over priced the Epic-S to 15k just as a safety net incase.

It might not be totally accurate, and I could be missing some things, but so far it's fine. And I could probably cut corners on some things also. It's all about putting your money in the right place at the right time.

I could wait on getting some of the things at first if the Epic-S price jumped over 15k, and then pick them up when I get more money. Don't be bummed that prices go up. There are always deals out there. =D

I hope you still plan on purchasing your Epic-S!
