"A wide zoom for Nikon and Canon crop sensor cameras boasting a focal length of 11-16 mm and constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. The zoom range is not exactly what you might call extensive, this lens is likely to generate considerable interest with its 17-25 mm approx. equivalent focal length (on Nikon DX, Canon APS-C users will get around 18-26 mm). Priced at around US $800, the lens will be available in December.

Sounds good. Looks like it might be available for Canon mount as well maybe? Or is it just Nikon? Reviews are non existent.

Yeah, it's available for Canon too. I forgot to mention it 'cause I'm so partial to Nikon. So I guess on the RED One, the focal length would be 18.7x27.2. Am I right?

I think it will be about a 12.5-18mm at 4k since that frame is almost the same....yes? I will be shocked however if the CA and fall off in the corners is acceptable to most people.

    12.5-18mm? How do you figure?

No it would be 11-16mm. If you are comparing the field of view of S35 or APS-C sized DSLR sensors(which are roughly the same size) to Full-frame 35mm stills format, then the equivalent FOV on Full-frame stills would be somewhere around 16-24 through 18-26mm( I haven't done the actual math) depending on the dimensions of the specific sensor you are making the comparison to. But the focal length doesn't change whether it's on super8 or 4x5 film. It's always an 11-16mm lens. The format just dictates how much of that image we are able to see or how much is cropped(well, that and the size of the image circle on a given lens).
But if you are comparing it to a S35mm motion picture camera, the FOV will be roughly the same. So, compared to say the 18-50mm RED zoom, it will be quite a bit wider.

Oh yeah, I just realized I was totally off 'cause I did the math without taking into account that it's not a full frame 35mm lens-it's a DX, rather..oops, sorry.

It would only work in the canon mount. I believe Tokina only delivers their atx pro lenses in nikon D type, which corresonds to the AF-D lenses from nikon. The birger mount will only support focussing with AF-S lenses.

Always talking about the field of view.... The 4K capture area is a bit smaller than the Nikon sensor therefore it will a little bit less wide FOV. Only the full 4.5K RAW is the same as the Nikon.

Based upon Brook's chart in this post:

Am I off base -- but, this lens does not seem to have a manual iris, and therefore, isn't a practical option for the Red -- when and if someone (Birger or???, they seem kind of mum) comes up with a lens adaptor that will provide at least diaphram control? In which case an array of quality digital still lenses would become useable -- perhaps -- best case scenario.

But please, if someone really knows something about this, tell me I'm off the mark-- that all this is, will come to pass, that it's not a pipe dream. And in what approximate time frame?
