  1. #1 "numerically honest 4k", Sony backhanded slap at Red
The F65 promises "numerically accurate, numerically honest 4k" and the rep is blatantly trying to take a shot at Red in this introduction of the Sony F65.

He also alludes to "dynamic range" as well as the "cost thing" but he gives no specifics on either. Any data on either out there?

Isn't EPIC "numerically accurate, numerically honest 4k" , realize its 5K but I mean it can do full 4K... or are they taking a shot at the RED One?

Well, red epic gives you measurably more resolution than this, epic gives around 4.4k keeping in mind the current debayering pattern, lens and of course compression,if this,as far as i heard, giver uncompressed 4k,red epic also has mathematically lossless compression at 2.5:1 and a resolution of 4.4k minimum if not more....... this camera is actually a 65mm sensor with a resolution of 8k that shoots at 8k then internally downscales and gives you a true measurably full 4k output.

This is what I hate about the whole Red 'thing' and this forum in general. Why do you rise to it? It's childish. I'm sure the Sony will be a great camera if someone wants to use it just as the Red and the Alexa are viable colours in our palette.

I don't know that he's taking a shot so much as trying to cast off any doubt about its resolution. He is more emphasizing the "Beyond a shadow of a doubt 4k" point than anything else. As would I. Nobody wants to get mired in the old "what is bayer pattern resolution" debate anymore. So nipping that in the bud is a good marketing decision.

Well i am sure f65 would be a great camera, after all its good that we have so many options red epic, arri alexa and now sony f65,this will keep moving up the bar for good, all the companies will develop their techs to great extents. But yes all this is happening because of red,if red did'nt came into existence in 2008 i dont think digital cinema as a whole would have evolved so quickly, now i am seriously waiting for the "DRAGON"..........

best not to let comments like this get out of hands guys. Sony is a competitor, everybody is gonna poke and prod at each other, because in the end they want business too and they want to win. Every company has done their own poking and prodding, including RED, that's the nature of things to show off why your product is better. Nature of the beast, in the end, the products will just speak for themselves and people choose what people choose. The fact that Sony is endorsing 4k now, and proving RED was right to begin with is a huge deal in itself.

Since it's a rotated bayer, it's easier to compare with other bayer sensors if you look at the numbers rotated back.

Rotating back, the horizontal pixel count is ~5700 and the total pixel count they say is visible equals 17.69 megapixels.

How they set their OLPF and do they bayer processing will determine how the camera responds to aliasing, DOF fallof, etc. which will in turn affect how much actual resolution is visible vs false resolution from aliasing.

No doubt they'll be able to extract 4k from 5700 pixel width.
Likewise, Epic does also from it's 5120.

Having another 4k camera is better for everyone.
