We are not going to be making a drive module for the DSMC program. When we came up with that module, we had no sight of the SSD cards and how advantageous they would be. SSD media outweighs the benefits in so many ways, forcing customers to use spinning Drives on EPIC at a reduced resolution and reduced quality settings just didn't make enough sense to continue the legacy.

Just because we like to make things right... we will be offering a trade in program for your RED DRIVES after NAB. We will give you 50% of the purchase price you paid for your RED DRIVE against the purchase of a 256GB SSD card. Hopefully this will help bring you guys forward into the SSD program.

That's very generous of Red. Jarred, are we going to see a spike in SSD shipments anytime soon? I'm looking forward to using that system with my current Red MX.

Thanks very much for the clarification, Jarred - and the generous offer.

Although of course you weren't *forcing* anyone to use spinning drives on EPIC, but the module would at least have given them the option...

I'll have to experiment at some point down the road to clarify how this may serve my eventual needs, but if it doesn't, it won't be RED's fault; you're bending over backwards as usual. If the price/capacity of SSD doesn't cut it, I may have to resort to hackery and try to interface a large-capacity spinning device to the internal port the SSD hooks up to or something. Or even tether the camera to a laptop or something for acquisition.

Where do I sign ? I love the SSDs - I might even be tempted to shoot with my Red One again ;-)

    Hi Jarred,

What about a RED RAM that was purchased used from someone on REDuser? I got one after they were no longer available new because I needed it for a GATES housing. I'd love to move to the new SSD drives, but getting two drive modules for the two RED ONEs we are currently using would blow our budget out of the water. We have one Stage 2 EPIC-X coming, and there has been talk of getting a second used RED RAM at some point, but now I'm really unsure of how to proceed.

Actually Jarred, now I come to think of it, would you consider making a considerably cheaper SSD module which supports only lower data rates? Perhaps mainly with Scarlet in mind, but also for 'undemanding' EPIC users?

It won't be that long before 512GB 1.8" SSDs become available, probably for under $1k. If you could sell me a lower data rate 512GB SSD for ~$1k, modulo the cost of RED testing & engineering of course, that would be a MUCH better option for me - pretty much in the same price/capacity/performance ballpark as a $900 640GB DRIVE. Because the alternative - spending $6400, less $450 DRIVE trade-in, for 2x256GB SSD, is a bit rich for me at this time...

Just a suggestion for consideration :-)

This is what makes this company so great. Not just a token gesture but a significant sum when it would be so easy to take advantage. Thanks!
