Are there any people here that use remote storage for your R3D's?

For example, does anyone here store tons of Terabytes on a remote server and access it remotely when they need it? Seems any bandwidth would suck for that type of access, making local storage the only method.

remote backups are a good idea (in addition to local backups). it's not a good idea to have everything in one place. just because you have 12 backups, but they're all in the same room, well... you never know what could happen. for working files, you definitely want local access, and preferably some quick drives.

I know you definitely can't work on files remotely. I've built some local storage which is getting 2.2GB/s. But I'm referring to remote storage for backups only.

Still, uploading would take days even for remote storage.

As an IT guy I can't bang this drum often enough: OFFSITE BACKUPS! (and no apology for shouting it). You need to be as professional about this as every other aspect of your work.

Fire. Theft. Earthquake. Seizure by police or courts. Viruses. You name it... if it matters a damn to you, offsite backups. Doesn't matter if you have four different backups if they're all in the same place and it burns down. And unless you don't care who gets to use it, encrypt it; good strong encryption is free and easy.

I use cheap & nasty USB drives. Pretty foolproof, and reliable enough if you use enough of them. Cheap insurance. I haven't experienced a significant data loss in twenty years.

i guess it would be good to have offsite secure backups in a centralized location - kind of a service bureau kind of thing. it would need to have an online/secure searchable database interface, and playable proxies. basically digital asset management (DAM for r3d)
drives would need to be physically shipped to the location and offloaded?
