Last night I did a quick Epic shoot at the famous Racetrack Playa at Death Valley, filming the mysterious sailing stones.







I wanted to keep the camera as low as possible, so I literally just set it on top of the cineslider, with no attachment device. This worked out extremely well! The entire setup was very portable. One person could easily carry it all on the half-mile walk out to that rock. Imagine trying this setup with a 65mm camera?

Wow... some kind of condensation softening and hardening the mud? Can't wait to see that Tom. You should shoot a documentary in 5k. I would love to shoot a coupe of interesting docus... and to do them without compromise over cinema quality is something special. Did you get the milky way behind it at night?

Hi Tom, looks like another promising setup there with an challenging environment.
I wonder what your thoughts are about stopping down a lens this far? Does that degrade the image in terms of 'native' saturation just like on broadcast cameras? I understand you may want deeper depth of focus for this scene though...and that it may not matter on this quality of lens and a raw workflow.

I tested this on pretty high end broadcast cams and lenses and assumed it would be the same on cinema quality gear, which may not be a fair assumption. I never went beyond a T8 on my zeiss cp.2's. You probably have more knowledge than I do in this area though.

I usually don't go past T11. i did not shoot this particular shot super deep, because I was trying to hide some unattractive shrubs and roads and stuff in the background. the lens settings in this shot are random.

Hey Tom, thanks for sharing. What is your power solution at the moment? What kind of run times are you achieving out there?

I'm just using some 150Wh Batteries4Broadcast V-lock batteries: http://www.batteries4broadcast.com/vmb09.htm

They last for quite a long time.. much longer than the Red One. Maybe 90 minutes? I'm not sure exactly. That's an IDX V-Lock plate with ET speedy clamp.

The power cable adapter is kind of a pain. Wish there was a shorter adapter cable or something. Same with the LCD cable... it's kind of awkward.
