    Folks,

I've waded somewhat and can't find the pertinent discussion, so I'll ask the impertinent question:

See title. $6k vs. $4k. (roundabouts, we guess).

That lens on the Scarlet fixed is quite a nifty lens - worth a bundle in its own right.

Has anything ever been said about whether or not that lens will also be offered in an interchangeable mount? And if so, at what price?

I'm thinking it might be worth the money to the buy the lens and the interchangeable body, to keep my options open, if the price premium over just buying the fixed wasn't too outrageous.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

    Mike

The 8x fixed zoom is actually deeply integrated into the fixed Scarlet brain so RED has said it does not plan on making an interchangeable version. People in the know say the lens alone is worth more than $6,000 so just consider the fixed an amazing electric zoom with a free Scarlet brain attached to the back.

No, RED has not said anything of the zoom lens being mounted on the CINEMA Scarlet. The electronics of the lens are so woven into the FIXED model that it is not possible unless RED were to start from scratch on building yet another lens.

EDIT: @Justin, great minds think alike... :)

Justin has it exactly right. I believe RED actually has made it clear they will NOT be attempting to make that lens as a standalone, at least in current plans.

    Nope, not going to happen.
The fixed brain with the lens included would be cheaper than similar optics built into a separate precision servo controlled zoom lens. So so quality ENG servo zooms for B4 mount HD cameras cost more than a Scarlet fixed brain. Current model manual super 16mm film camera lenses start around 3 times the cost of a Scarlet fixed brain.
Buy the fixed brain, then add the interchangeable body and primes later if you feel the need.
I have nearly the cost of a Scarlet brain invested in a selection of older used 16mm lenses, probably none of which are up to the optical quality of the fixed lens or the Red mini-primes and I am looking forward to playing with them. But even a used recent generation 7-81mm Angenieux or 8-64mm Canon manual zoom alone that might be close to the optical quality of the fixed brain is significantly more expensive.

What about the other parts of the fixed lens Scarlet - does anyone know if they will be useable with other brains?

e.g: Buy a fixed lens Scarlet, then buy a FF Epic brain down the line. Will the handle, LCD, card reader and redmote supply everything needed to run the Epic? Except for a Canon mount and lens of course.

'100% interchangeable' was the big selling point when these cameras were announced 2 years ago, but I know there have been changes since then.

Yes, the fixed brain is just like every other brain except for the lens. The system is completely modular.

Give us a little more heads up on module prices and we'd be happy to answer those questions for others too...

I'm desperately wanting to know what kind of packages will save me money and if they'll allow me to go EPIC... hehehe
