This is... without doubt the most bipolar board I have seen in sometime. I can understand Mr. Jannard's want to release information early, but with the constant schoolhouse whining, I would say you are all simply confirming his previous thought to stay quiet. It all seems mighty presumptous to scream about price when they haven't announced it yet. That said, if you can't afford the S35, go with the 2/3rds. That's likely what I will be doing.

Steven, welcome to the fray!!! Fun, ain't it?
One camera is a shoot... two or more is a production.

Agreed...but people are just worried as some waited long time.
2/3 is an excellent option. S35 is not magic.
The price will be what it has to be for the business to exist.

Well I have a different perspective on the price issue. If the Epic-S gets above a certain threshold in price it becomes a non-product.

People were 'concerned' about the price difference before but that was the huge differentiating feature. If Epic-S was 18k and Epic was 23k then you might as well go "all the way". What made Epic-S so appealing was that it was perfect for 90% of production. I think most of the time I'll be shooting 24p. Occasionally I'll need high-speed. Something in-between doesn't really offer me that much extra value since if you want 96p you also probably want 120p.

I see Epic-S as the purchase option but Epic-X as the rental. There's a fine line in there after which a lot of people will rent instead of purchasing to just keep on hand and if they're going to rent, the incremental rental cost from Epic-S to Epic-X would be negligible. I doubt most rental houses will carry Epic-S since most of the price wouldn't be in the camera price but in overhead and maintenance anyway.

But I'm not terribly concerned, the HDRx price increase on Scarlet wasn't that much even though there was a lot of panic at the time. I expect a similar % price increase.

Oh I am totally with them, I would love to have a 35 sensor, and have been drooling over this thing since three minutes after they announced it, I also drooled over the RED ONE and the EPIC proper, but I (for now) can't afford them either, so I deal.

I know we have to stop on this... sometime. But I think that IMHO could be an interesting option. It's all about "power", so:

    - EPIC
    - EPIC²
    - EPIC³

You can go on exponentially to 4, 5 if new EPICs wear more and more power... And you can add some "letters" like (EPIC²-X, or EPIC²-Handmade, EPIC³-MONSTRO...) without make it a confusing awfull-codestyle name... Easy and simple.

    Thanks for sharing RED Team!

The only thing I take from the name change for the low end Epic is to distinguish the S35 sensor line from the 2/3" Scarlet sensor line. It makes very good sense for this reason and I don't think it is an excuse to raise prices beyond what development, manufacturing, and support costs for the feature set and performance limits of the camera require. Have some faith that Red will do the best they possibly can to maintain an exceptional cost/performance ratio. Just don't expect them to compromise performance for low cost beyond a certain point with this generation of cameras. HDRx™ for all!

I dislike to have to say it but I'd rather have the Scarlet S35 in any way whatsoever. Especially now with this information from yours that only stands and reforces my idea.
OK... I didn't quite get this. You would prefer the Scarlet S35 to the EPIC-S?

Simple. There are people who will never buy the 2/3rds. Me for example. But could buy the Scarlet S35.

Wow, deja vu. Sounds like many of the S35 Scarlet hopefuls are getting a nice taste of what us fixed-lens Scarlet hopefuls got many moons back: That is a price increase (albeit with more features) that places the product out of an affordable price range. Welcome to the club. :/
