What exactly are we discussing here?

Whether or not you'd invest in Sony right now, you cannot invest in Red as it's in private hands. So the matter of fiscal performance of each company is, I would suggest, a little moot. In other words, who gives a shit? We're film makers, cinematographers and photographers here.

We are, or IMHO should be, discussing the merits of the individual cameras (as best we can guess at, since neither the Sony or the Scarlet are available yet) and, given the relative specs, from where I'm sitting it looks to me a walk-over victory for the Scarlet. The only thing that can be said against it is that it's not shipping yet - by definition a temporary condition. The shortcomings of the Sony, such that they are, appear to be a little more permanent.
    Cheers

But we're more than film makers, cinematographers and photographers; we're also people. People think about things outside of their profession. Or at least I hope they do. Lessons, inspiration and knowledge come from many avenues.

Personally I think the specs of this camera are a lesson. Here we have a company with huge resources, amazing talent and a devoted customer base - Sony. And this is the camera that they think is the optimal product to create. Now it's possible we are just an odd market and Sony is right or Sony is making a mistake in which case a little reflection on how an organization which has every excuse to succeed would err in such a way. Because unlike Sony most of us aren't as well primed for success and blundering on without caution as to what ensnared them could end in repeat of their fate. If they aren't making a mistake and are right then interpreting it as a mistake means we're the cautionary tale. "Is there something in the Sony cam that we should be wanting but are missing? " It's worth pausing and contemplating. Of whose hubris should we be weary? Sony's our Ours or neither? Or both!? :D
