People bashing the cam, might want to read all the specs. It's priced right in the middle of the PMW-EX shoulder mount line, plus is expandable and offers S-Log (via SDI). The sensor is new, developed in house at the Cinealta division. So it remains to be seen how well it performs.

If this camera makes great looking 1080p video, the people who should be worried is ARRI. Combine this with a Ki Pro mini and you have an affordable Alexa.

I find it interesting they made the announcement the day after Jim announced that Epic would be shipping soon.

For a variety of reasons, none of which have to do with Red, this camera is going to be popular with a lot of people. It won't be a Red vs Sony issue either.

Thank you. I love red and excited about my epic, but it's time to take a break from Reduser, it's like watching Fox news.

And thanks, again, but you're way too rational...

Not only ARRI payer actually ;-) but how to explain it differently to the Alexa potential customer?

When respected independent reviewers get their hands on it and start testing it.
Until then, it's up in the air.

I've had my EX1 for 3 years and it is still a badass little camera. I think this f3 is going to fly. There is a time and a place for almost everything. Not so sure about the dual link SR stuff, seems like that is not where people want to go.

Sony Engineers are great. I just wish someone could liberate them ala the Great Escape. ;)

Technically speaking most of their products are top notch. It's just frustrating when you know their engineers' work is getting hamstrung by annoying usability decisions like recording 4:2:2 8bit GOP when they could have at least gone with something like Cineform who I'm sure would have been more than happy to license their tech out.

And to get 4:4:4 I have to buy a firmware update in 6 months as well as an external recorder? Pass. I don't care if it lasts 20 years. I don't want high compression MPEG2 today let alone 20 years from now.

Sony gear is always well made, no question there. It's just that they have a tendency to underspec and over state. HDCam @ 4:1:1, 1080p cameras with 1,440 wide sensors, PsF pretending to be progressive, 4k projectors that are actually quadHD.

There seems little doubt that the camera will be pretty damn good and will sell like hotcakes and will probably hold together for years. Importantly, it will probably also hold it's value - which I think might be great for many when Scarlet ships.

However, this and the Panny are, at this early stage, already under-specced and under-featured compared to Red's upcoming cameras. I'll wager the same will not be true of Epic and Scarlet when they ship - whenever that may be. And if I'm wrong and Sony or Panasonic or Canon or whoever do manage to up the ante on Red, then all the better for us. Just remember, if that happens, it was Red that pushed them to it.
    Cheers
    Bettsy
