Film most likely. If not, than MX. If it was Epic or MX though, we probably would have heard something by now. They are supposed to begin shooting in January or February correct?

I am not sure if they shoot that fast, but pretty quick for sure! cast is set, they just nailed down New Zealand yesterday, but I bet there is a lot of set building and the like to go first. I would love to see Jackson's visual style within fantasy combined with Red on this. Very interested!

Epics, on 3d rigs. They've been testing with them for a little while now.

would be epic (pun) if they did... But, on such a big budget picture, I'd be surprised if they are scheduled to shoot in February, that they'd be planning on doing so on a camera that is currently unreleased, and unfinished only a few months out from their shooting dates. Plus, taking into account what Jim has stated before that folks can shoot EPIC today if they shoot local to them, b/c they can provide support. But, providing it that far away from home base would probably be out of the question.

If release ready EPIC's were going to be here in a few weeks, then maybe it would be a possibility... beyond that, I don't see such a big project using something that would have possibly only just come out, that they haven't had proper time to prep with, or something that is still in unfinished form. But, who knows what goes on, is going on, behind the scenes? only those behind it...

I wish I could believe you, but with only 2 posts, I need a source

I believe that EPIC can manage to get Alien prequels (Ridley Scott) alongside The Hobbits.
Mr. Scott also want to shoot in native 3D.

I am speculating here, of course, but I would bet if you were Peter Jackson and said to Jim you wanted to shoot your new, $500 million dollar film in 3D on Epic, there would be as much support, both local and US based, as you could ever want. It would be a serious piece of positive acclaim for RED if this were the case. Probably *the* most anticipated film in quite a while made by the guy that smashed all box office records and produced an amazing trilogy in LOTR.

I think Epic is a lot more functional/operational than a lot of us think. Kinda like the Death Star in Return of the Jedi.

Many rumors put Jarred and Jim in New Zealand a few weeks back for their "two week test". Whether that was, "Hey Pete, come check out the new EPICs!" or "Hey Pete, we want to show you the new EPIC and convince you it is a reliable camera for the Hobbit; and we will do whatever it takes to make it happen"... who knows. These are just the scenarios that played out in my head :)

Jarred has said that the TATTOO program is well underway, so...Either way, I would bet that: one, PJ currently has a TATTOO and has been testing it for several weeks; and two, RED obviously knows how significant it would be to have the Hobbit shot on RED.

I was under the impression that Peter Jackson was a huge fan and supporter of Red?
