Hey, i've just been given a short film to edit that was shot on RED and the footage is in black and white. The problem is that it is supposed to be in colour, but somehow all of the footage saved to their drives is in black and white and they desperately want it to be colour. I need to know if there is any way that the footage can be converted back to colour or if they are stuck with it as it is? Thanks for any help you can give me here.

Don't panic! Red always records in colour. The only reason it will be in black and white will be because the metadata it was recorded with was set to black & white, although I do vaguely remember a bug from a long time ago in an old firmware or old Red software where this also happened.

Just play with the colour controls in whatever RED software you are using to view the footage which should restore the colour, and then if necessary remake the Quicktime proxies.

It would help if you list what software, hardware and camera firmware you are using.

That's good to hear! The software I have is RedCine and Avid MetaFuze for the conversion, if I need something else just let me know and i'll get it. I'm not totally sure what the firmware is and can't contact the person that owns the camera right now, but the camera definately had the old mysterium sensor in it. What hardware do you need to know? It's on a Windows 7 PC. Also can you please give me more detailed instructions on how to fix it, i'm new to the red software?

    Dave,

if you are using Redcine, just look at the saturation level .... should be 0 at black and white. Just reset the saturation level and your color should be restored.

Assuming you have the R3D files as well on which to make the metadata change...
