I am assuming Scarlet will come out end of 2011 for people who have not been nominated for oscars....so...

Does anyone know of any competitor cameras that will be coming out around NAB 2011? I am not talking about some improved canon 7d or any other compressed HD BS...

Sony sure dropped the ball with their redundant ex3. There's got to be something out there that we can compare to since Scarlett is now....FRANKLY MY DEAR I DONT GIVE A DAMN release date...

By the time scarlett rolls out I would not be surprsied if my iphone can shoot RAW,,,,

Depends on what you mean by "competitors". If you mean something that can shoot raw, then no, don't count on it. If you mean a large-sensor video camera, the only one on the radar is the Panasonic AF100, due this December. Sony has talked about having a large-sensor $19,000 camcorder out in April, but that's more likely a Red One competitor than a Scarlet competitor.

I don't expect Canon to have anything in the way of a professional video camera with a large sensor for at least another year or two, but they do have their global expo coming up next month, and the IBC show is next month, so within the next three weeks you should have a better idea as to where most of the companies are going.

The closest thing to a Scarlet competitor, in terms of operational features and capabilities, would probably be the SI-2K. But it's 5x the price.

And the SI-2K has been shipping for awhile now. If you're wanting to know about planned cameras that are not yet shipping, the Ikonoscop A-Cam dll certainly qualifies as a Scarlett competitor: http://www.ikonoskop.com/

Similar sensor size, RAW recording, tiny. Unlike the Scarlet, they'll be taking orders at IBC two weeks from now and have published the RAW files from test shoots they've done: http://www.ikonoskop.com/dii/footage

I guess looking at other cameras such as the one quoted, it just goes to show how much RED is pushing the limit with what they are doing with the Scarlet.

    Ikonoscop A-Cam dll: 1-30 fps 1920x1080

for about $8,850 Includes the camera, 1 Ikonoskop 80GB Memory Cartridge.

    ------------------------

Fixed Scarlet: 1-120 fps (150fps burst mode) 3072x1728

for $4750 Includes the Brain, Lens, Side CF Module, REDmote, 2.8" Touchscreen LCD WITH NEW TOUCH TO FOCUS TECHNOLOGY, REDvolt Battery and Travel Charger

Kinda crazy to be refreshed on what else is going on with the market and what Scarlet is aiming for...

And a viewfinder... Also, it's a CCD sensor, so no rolling shutter. And 30 fps at 1080p seems to be a pretty tough limit to pass for CCD sensors, though there's a couple of cameras that do it. The RAW format is also open, unlike RedCode. I don't think it's unreasonably-priced, given the cost of the SI-2K and the fact that the Scarlet isn't even for sale yet.

But you're right, the Scarlet specs are awesome; that's why everyone here wants one!!!

Source? I thought it was $4750 for just the brain w/lens.

Check out RED.com, click on Scarlet.

    Brain is $2750.

By the way, the Ikonoscop DII was released in 2008, and they even took preorders. It's been constantly delayed, worse than the Scarlet. From what we have seen, the Drama project seems to capture far better images than the Ikonoscop from the same sensor.

At Scarlet's price and features, it simply has no foreseeable competition, as of now, in the digital cinema world. But a lot could change by the time it ships.

Of course I'm not attacking you, but I'd prefer to have software provided by RED to use a compressed form of RAW data streams rather than dealing with 240MB/sec that the A-Cam dll will...

No worries, I'm firmly in the RED camp. When you've already got an Epic X, adding the 2/3" interchangeable lens Scarlet brain for $2750 + the module adaptor for $300 is a complete no-brainer. Configured with the H.264 module (which you've probably already got for your Epic), that's an easy way to do run-and-gun ENG/EFP/Documentary work with your normal RED accessories (and still have the RAWs for backup/grading should you need to).

That was just one of many reasons why I've bought into RED's vision. Other than the missing ProRes module, I couldn't be happier with where RED is going with their system, especially the upcoming Monstro sensor options in a few years. I'm willing to put up with a lot from RED to be a part of helping them succeed, because it's really in our industry's best interest that they do. This is free market capitalism at it's best, and I've already voted with my wallet (and will keep voting). :-)
