  1. #1 Louis C.K.'s new show "Louie"
I'm a big fan of Louis C.K.'s stand-up comedy so I had to download first two episodes of his new... sitcom, I guess you could call it, "Louie".

    In the credits there's this:

    Red Technician CLAYTON HASKELL

I'm guessing that's C.H.Haskell who I've seen post on this forum. If that is the case, I'd be interested in reading Mr. Haskell's thoughts about the show and about how it was shot.

There's a pretty great interview over at the Onion Av club with Louie on how the show came to be and his ideas for it. There is not any technical information in it but it's a good look into his creative process.

LCK is one of the most brilliant comedians out there right now. Can't wait to see what he did with his new show.

Greetings folks, Yes Clayton Haskell is my name and it was a pleasure serving for LouisCk on our first season of his new show. The show title is "Louie", it premiered last night (6/29/10) on FX at 11pm after Rescue Me. Louis CK is a brilliant comedian and writer, I learned a lot from him as director as well. Pretty amazed at how effortlessly he made it look to wear so many hats on set...Louis CK wrote, produced, acted, directed, and edited his new show, just to name few. It goes without saying that he surrounded himself with an incredibly talented team to help bring his vision to light.

As you may have guessed the show is 100% RED, and the end of season we obtained MX. We were on a micro budget so the The DP Paul Koestner kept it lean and mean which seemed to work out for Louis who has a film background and likes things organic, natural, and filmlike.

Are there any questions in particular you would like to know?

Thanks for chiming in, Mr. Haskell. I really liked the first two episodes of the show. Look-wise, I very much enjoyed the coziness and warmth of the scene at the start of episode 2, where the guys are talking around the poker table.

Who graded the show and what with? Do you know what soft/hardware LCK used for editing? What tasks did a "Red Technician" perform on the show?

Awesome hearing that "Louie" was shot on RED. I missed last nights episode but I definitely want to check it out.

Definitely sounds like something that's worthy of being on the SHOT ON RED section on red.com. Hint Hint Red Team.

Hey Petri, pretty sure Mr. Haskell is my father, Clay works as well. ;)
Glad you liked the opening episodes, I will be sure to tell Louis and Paul (DP)...I know he appreciates the feedback. I only sat in on a couple color session and I believe it was done in FCP Color. I will double check the facts on that and where it was done but often I would dial in a look that the DP and Louis liked in camera and that look was baked in...a slight s-curve may have been implemented, or color balancing to match scenes but from screening the 1st episodes last night on FX, the footage looked like it did in camera.

We experimented with REC 709, and later I pushed for redspace and finally we ended in RedColor which was the most pleasing and natural color space (to my eye) that we worked in. Louis was happy, thats all that matters to me. RED did a good thing with Redspace and I hope they continue to evolve it so that it only gets better...always room for improvement right. I will have to wrap this up tomorrow as I am going to bed now, early call time. Cheers
