I noticed that on some test footage posted earlier, and I do a lot of back lighting so this one feature is a potential deal breaker for me.
there are flares like this on Heat during the last driving sequence
That looks like the type of spectrum you can see in the OLPF.
All the RPP do this...at least, from my experience. I love it.
I haven't heard of this happening with any of the other primes. Grabs or it didn't happen.
I remember pointing the 25mm and 35mm at the sun, playing around for a long time, trying really hard to get flares. Nothing like this. Not even close.
I did see this type of flare on the first samples posted here of the 18mm. Not sure where the thread is. The one with the old teddy bear and BMW 3-series.

In my opinion is hard to come to conclusions of anything with out knowing how each shot that produced each individual flare was captured.
But also I must say that I love each lens for what it does, Flare, Chromatic Aberration, Barrel distortion, and many other so called defects are infect carefully manufactured characteristics of each lens.
Un less off course totally screw ups, he he.
I happen to love flaring, and some times go nuts trying to get them artificially, so I love this effect on a lens, and this are amongst the easiest thing to avoid.
I Love the RPP's and RPZ's for their chosen characteristics.
But the limit is there. If you want a hot source in or just off the frame then it seems you will get these wave pattern flares, which are very strong.
If you don't want them at all, the it would seen you'll need to carry a second wide. Perhaps Duclo's PL 11-16 Tokina, on a budget. It does have pretty pronounced flares, but nothing like these. I might find these more pleasing, but they seem so overpowering, so big, and so hard to avoid noticing with this rainbow pattern. This would be especially practical with two cameras and a stand-by Canon/Nikon mount, which would let you buy the un-modified Tokina (~$600) and save a few thousand dollars, and rentals costs. There is always other far more expensive primes and trying to keep down the number of days.
Then again an 18mm is more of a widest-interior lens. With interiors you have control over light, but if you want a light here, and here gives you a flare, one that will not go un-noticed...
Perhaps the 14mm will suppress these better, then you'll likely be covered for most wide exts,and get others you wouldn't have gotten either way. Or perhaps the 17-50mm!!! I hope the zoom doesn't get this sort of flare.
Lets not forget the thousands of gorgeous images you can get with the 18mm! The videos posted have some very beautiful images, tons of sharp detail and that cool 18mm perspective.
And you always have to mention cost!!! Can't beat them in aspect either.
