Oppps, the "ASUS Republic of Gamers G73JH-A1 " doesn't have a Firewire or e-Sata. How slow is USB2 or can I use an external wireless drive? Is this a deal breaker for me??? How much slower is USB2?

Mike if your considering editing off a wireless drive I think you need to do some google research on raid and speeds needed to edit various levels of HD material.

No. Unless your offlining very small proxies.
Your going to be looking at something that hooks up through the expresscard like the Caldigit array or something similar.

That's the problem, this laptop doesn't come with a expresscard or firewire. So what I'm asking, is this a deal breaker? I could just edit on the 1TB it comes with and use the USB2 for backups etc, right? Or is UBS2 very very slow?

I'm really trying to avoid buying a desktop....

Yes it would be for me anyway.

As much as you may hate it, without fanboyism ion my part for your budget (Im guessing under 2k) a 2nd hand Macbook Pro is the most appropriate solution. If it was higher you'd have options but then you might as well get a desktop that would be 10x more powerful.

Think about getting a small laptop and a powerful desktop maybe?

The 1tb will be too slow btw. Its raided but will still leave you cutting 1 stream of prores before you get too slow.

I'll be honest with you, it has nothing to do with budget... I just hate apple and I don't want to switch. If I buy a desktop I will have to throw it away after 6 month because I'm just going to stay in the US for this one project, for 6 month, and then get back to Europe.... and I will be shooting on a 5D, so... How many MG is 1 minute of 1080 HD anyway? 150 MB?
