  1. #1 Project coming from AVID now in FCP for confo
Ok heres my prob, i had already an hard time making a good edl from avid ( god their app is powerful but the workflow is an headache ), the edl is opening fine in color relinking to the original .rdc, but final cut is unable to open the edl i dunno why. Anyway i tried from color to do a send to FCP procedure but exporte timeline in FCP have new name like 01_g.mov instead of the original red names, any advice on this ?

then second question : i might want to transcode the r3d of the timeline to proress 444, same stuff keeping the file names, and then eventually export the prores 4444 files that need vfx to dpx ( i presume there is a cinema tool workflow for this right ? )

Well i m thanking you for any advices

Final Cut's EDL handling sucks, pure and simple. If you're trying to go from Avid to FCP, the only headache-free way is with Automatic Duck.

The file names you're getting out of Color are normal. Color uses Shot_Grade.mov as its file naming structure. There's no way to change it. It's designed to be the last (Or almost last) step in your workflow, so once you go past it, you shouldn't necessarily need the original filenames. Is it optimal? No. Is it ever going to change? Also no.

If you're exporting a DPX sequence, why not go back to the original R3Ds? It doesn't make a lot of sense to go from R3D to ProRes to DPX. Do your edit, then send the XML to Clipfinder and render the FX shots to DPX in the highest possible quality.

the only prob and i don't know why, xml export is not working on the avid we did the edit, so i m stuck with EDL right now. i had such headache with avid that i want to to an only apple workflow, and wanted a way to transcod to prores only the shots from the edl or at least be able to import something in fcp so i can use proxies or what, so if there is edit change, sound, etc we ll work on FCP instead of reopening media composer. then i ll use clipfinder for the fx shots.
Got damn there is nothing simple in the post world, and well automatic duck is way too expensive for my need :)
    anyway thx for helping :)

Avid XML can go to Monkey or cineXML as a pull list and from there create new exports as DPX, TIFF, ProRes, etc. There is no support for XML to FCP unless Apple wants to implement that either in FCP or Color. Without XML, then it is EDL or Automatic Duck. Avid EDL's have a much better reputation than FCP - but I agree than an EDL only workflow is limiting.

You may have a corrupt bin. If it opens in Media Composer, move sequence to a different bin and save out as a new one. If it is being emailed, some email systems corrupt the header, so zip it before sending to someone.

When creating an XML from MC, it is just the spans used so Clipfinder would only use that range to export - not the entire clip.
