I know there are tons of posts on using a plasma for color grading but no one is talking about how they are calibrating it. Yes, there is plenty of info on how to do this on http://www.avsforum.com (thanks mmost) but I thought I would ask here because it seems as some people are using this TH-42PF11UK 42" Professional Plasma Monitor. And this is the one I need calibrated. I went to a calibration meeting at B&h video and the guy there was using http://spyder.datacolor.com/product-ht-cfp.php

I have a 23" cinetal and need a larger monitor to match it for the client. I want to pull the trigger on a 42panasonic 11pf plasma but was hoping to get an opinion on how well it will match the cinetals 709 color space.

I have talked to the people at SpectraCal's/CalMAN about this and they want to sell me 2 probes and some software to do this with at a cost of 3,500 or more. When I was at a cinetal demo they used a hubble probe and a davio to get a plasma to 709. Cost for those 2 items is like another 8-10,000.00. What is your opinion on getting a plasma to 709 without breaking the bank. I don't mind spending 3-4grand but want it spent on the best equipment to do the job.

We use the hubble to calibrate the series 11 plasmas - but we can get it dialed in without using a LUT/davio - it takes some patience ... but you can nail it.

If you don't want to invest in a probe - you should find someone with a probe and pay them to calibrate your monitor. It's really the only way.

A little secret to the series 11 - you need to "burn them in" - leave them on 18% gray for 300 hours (yes .. I did say 300 hours) before you calibrate and go to work -

Mark is right, you don't need a LUT driven by a Davio for a single monitor setup but if you want to match two monitors precisely then the only sane way of doing it is using a 3D LUT on each. That's not to say you shouldn't get them as close as possible *without* the LUT, in fact it's very important that you do.

thanks mark! whats you opinion on what size to buy the 42 or the 50 for 1080P 24p? or wait till I can get my hands on a 12 series? My dealer said the 42 11series does 1080p better.

WHat software are you using with the hubble to calibrate?

    thanks.

    Seriously, what for? why?

Could someone reveal their settings for the series 11 plasmas, I can not get ours to a Y higher then 48cd/m2 taking into account that it is a 50" I should aim to 80cd/m^2 for REC 709.

    Are there any hidden settings?

We are feeding it dual SDI 444 YUV strait from the scratch system.

    p.s

We do not have a Hubble but trying to measure with the x-rite beamer doing an OIP from the scratch.

Any help will be very appreciated.

    Thanks.

What's almost certainly happening here is that you are using a full-field white image, that is a white frame that fills the screen and the screen's peak brightness limiter is kicking in and reducing the output. To calibrate it put up a white patch that's around one third of the screen and measure that.

Not sure if you can disable the brightness limiter on the 11 series, wouldn't really recommend doing so even if you can.
