I would love to help - either lighting/grip or post.
Keep us updated.
Thats great! I'm in MTL, but if I am available on the date you choose, I would be glad to come down and help.
Gregor,
Shoot power lines against grey skies. Shoot them horizontally across the frame and diagonally across the frame.
And yes I am still bullet hole free.
Method
I don't know how much help I will be, but I can carry and hold stuff very well. If you'll have me, I'll be there for sure.
Whoa! How'd I miss this thread??? This sounds fantastic. A few points:
1.) Gregor, sorry I haven't called. I'm now back from the S. Africa shoot so I'll call you tomorrow.
2.) I think we could do a nice job of this and contribute a few things to the early RED knowledge base (besides... LART is hogging all the limelight)
3.) THE SHOOT - I think the shoot could feature technical tests, comparisons and aesthetic footage:
A) TECH - I reviewed PS's technical 'shot list' for the SI-2K camera tests, which was very thorough and exhaustive. They included the standard resolution, exposure, colour and latitude tests as well as addressing some esoteric topics like rolling shutter. Of course, lens comparisons would be useful but I think the real litmus test would be a shoot-out between Red and film (and maybe even the SI-2K). We probably can't get free/cheep F-900s or Varicams, but I'm sure that would have limited value anyway. I think the real test everyone wants to see is RED v FILM! Assuming PS will allow us to use a Arri-535, I could look into getting the film processed and scanned @ 4K (I'll see what I can do). We may have to purchase a couple rolls of 100ASA vision stock, but I'm sure we can figure that out. It would be really great to do side-by-side shots with RED vs. an Arri, featuring resolution, under/over exposure tests, dynamic range, etc. For this it would probably be best to use industry standard Cooke or Zeiss glass (I think PS has S-4s) and keep everything else consistent. I think the under/over - shoulder/knee comparison would be very interesting
B) ART: Assuming that the tests would be widely downloaded we may as well try to showcase Canada in a good light. A good showpiece for all involved. I think the aesthetic footage could feature the city a bit. Maybe some outdoor footy by the lake, or some night shots at Yonge & Dundas. Whatever... I just look forward to filming the Toronto skyline and NOT having to remove the CN-Tower in post.![]()
4.) POST - As implied above I'll look into getting Technicolor on board (they are already working with PS on post pipeline stuff). I can offer Inferno and Flame for compositing (green screen / blue screen shots?) as well as color grading, keying, difference keying, tracking, image stabilization, post slow-motion, etc. I'll see if we can get a Luster suit for the colour grade, but failing that we can again use Inferno. It might be fun to transfer a few shots to DPX for Walt to grade in the Spirit 4K suite. And... it's a long shot, but we might even be able to film-out some of the shots on the Arri 4K laser recorder for viewing in the PFA screening theatre. Which brings me to...
5.) FINDINGS / PRESENTATION. This could be dual focused:
A) First; a presentation in a suite or theatre for the local enthusiasts. Technicolor has hosted ASC meetings and industry piss-ups before so they may be convinced. I'll have to look into the proper screening venue - I'm not sure where our 2K projector went, but it would be nice to do it in a top-notch environment. I think our IMAX screening theatre would rock, but it may have to be held in a Luster or Inferno suite. Alas all of the monitors are HD and 2K - so we'll see.
B) Second; a web presentation for the rest of the world, with images, clips and literature. I'm not sure who could host all that data, and for how long, but I'll inquire about using our ftp site. If not then I can always buy a .mac account.
6.) Selfish stuff: I'm personally very interested to test Red's low light capability. I was previously obsessed with buying a Zeiss Super Speed prime set, but with Red's recent ASA tinkering I'm not sure if that's necessary any more. I have a single Zeiss T1.2 MKII 25mm which we could test against the Red 18-50mm if there's time.
7.) Should we call this TART - Toronto Area Red Test? Or TARC - Toronto Asshole Reality Check?
Anyway, I'll get back to you with some concrete answers on the above.
Cheers
Alex Boothby
