    Hello,

Just got my EVF from RED a couple of weeks ago. I was playing with the settings one day and I noticed that the image in the EVF still has that strobing effect regardless of when I set it on SYNC or FIXED. I'm on build 20.

PS. Why does the EVF has this effect and the LCD doesn't in the first place ?

    thanks

Issue is well known, if you mean image stutter... There used to be a setting some place in earlier builds( I'm still on build 16...) called "opengate" or something. You should activate that one. Can't tell you more, my Red is away for audio upgrade ! Hope that helps.

P.S the stutter you get without that setting is very much the one you will get in your real shots if your subject is moving against a sharp background. I'm still fighting with it...

As the EVF is a much faster response display than typical LCDs, it doesn't have as much inter-field blurring.
Which is a good characteristic, but it does tend to illustrate 24 fps motion stutter more than the LCD does.

As computer screens are getting faster too (lower ms value) they also are getting more susceptible to 24 fps stutter..

OPEN GATE is a mode where the sensor feeds the EVF images at 2x the recorded to media rate. So at 24 fps, the EVF receives 48 actual images, rather than 24 images repeated 2 times each, so motion is certainly smoother.

Buhot, IŽll second that. I find the EVF helps a lot (without Open Gate activated) to simulate the stuttering while pannig etc.

I found I was getting some bizarre flickering in the bright areas even whilst holding still, until I turned off dark detail, now it's gone

    Thanks Stuart,

By inter-field blurring you don't mean interlaced or something do you ? The EVF still scans progressive it's just the progressive scanned frames that are being dispyed with much lower delay than on the LCD.

OK but then why do we have the option of FIXED and SYNC if it doesn't make any difference. And why does Open gate make a difference at 48 or 50fps (when shooting 25fps) when SYNC should do the same thing just foir the EVF right ?

... I still don't know how to avoid image stuttering, except when using slo-mo... If I want to avoid slo-mo... then nothing seems to work really...
