Posting on behalf of someone else: Spencer Caesare had registered but can't seen to post at all despite that being his real name. He gets a permission error.

    Thanks for any help.

Hey guys I am new to RedUser.net but I have been using the Red One (Now MX) since it made it's debut on the market. I recently just shot with the Epic for the first time a few weeks ago and was impressed, yet also let down. I know that this site is mostly for people that love to sing Red's praises yet I want some serious discussion on what I am about to say, not some bias talk, but real discussion.

As mentioned I just used the Epic for the first time the other day. It seems to me like the idea is for companies to send out a camera that is realistically in Beta testing and barely working. Also the design of the epic bothers me a lot. First of all the camera ships without the side handle or the red mote because everything is back ordered, so we have to use the touch screen monitor. The camera is being used without playback, so we have to upload the 5K footage to RedCine and hope it can buffer fast enough for the client to see playback, or you have to use a KiPro to record "Proxy" files, this is absolutely annoying. Along with only having the monitor on the top of the camera we only have 4 1/4 - 20" mounting holes which have to be used for the monitor. Yet when the monitor is hooked up (because you need to control the camera) you have no way to mount a handle, but wait you can buy a red accessory for a red accessory to mount the other red accessory on the camera so you can have a handle...(sound confusing?? don't worry, it's just Red). Now for the Epic lets but the SDI out in the most inconvenient spot on the camera where only little kids can mount and unmount BNC cables. While we are at it lets make the audio input on the camera an 1/8th inch jack so you have to have a battery powered mic and phantom power can no longer be used. Since we are on a roll lets change the input ports on the back of the Epic and make the connections different from the RED MX, so no longer can you power a micro force controller off of the camera, now you need to buy new cables for the camera. Oh and if that isn't enough for you to deal with while you are an AC prepping a camera package...lets not put a tape hook on the camera so you have an even harder time taping out your lenses. And conveniently if you have the 19mm top mount bracket accessory you will have a fun time changing your back focus especially if you go from a warm to cold climate unlike a film camera to the Arri Alexa that uses shims and is a solid structure design.

Another problem that I have with Red is as follows. First of all I am a head tech at a rental house with several cameras including Red, Arri, Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Zeiss, Angineux and so on. We bought the Red 18-85mm lens, it went out on one job and we got it back, it would tape out at 18mm and 85mm but anywhere in-between you would lose focus. So we shimmed it, but it wouldn't be corrected, so we sent the lens to Duclos, Paul at Duclos said that most Red lenses have this same issue and that this was the worst one he had ever seen, that we should send it back to Red for a refund. Awesome we will send it back right...so we did, 2 weeks later Allen in RMA says that the lens has been tested and meets "their" standard for film gear...haha, I actually sent a message back saying "you're joking right." No refund, no help, nothing, so we are stuck with a lens that does not stay in focus in between the 18mm and 85mm hash marks. Red to me has the worst customer service out of any camera company I have ever known. Arri on the other hand has 24/7 customer support as does Abel. We have been in business for over 30 years as a rental house and have never had such a horrible experience with gear as we have with RED, it is a shame people actually want to deal with them. Oh and by the way, their "put you on hold" message is really aggravating and numbing, Red, you need to get your act together.

I really want to see how many of you have dealt with Red like I have, they all know me by name right now over there and probably cringe when I call, stick to sunglasses, those don't overheat and give you corrupt files.

    Sincerely,
    Tyler
