Before we ask Red to compete in price vs sensor size with Canon et al, lets see Canon compete in video quality with Red, any model. I'm sorry, but Canon 5D video quality as far as aliasing, pixel structure , artifacts is little better than HDV. People are taken in by the strengths and advantages of the large sensor, but much of this is crippled by the line skipping and long GOP codec. The video quality is just not that good.

This is fair. A lot more worthy of discussion than the typical "omg look at thiz camruh man hur hur".

Yeah, the aliasing, bits of artifacting you can see every so often when pixel peeping, in comparison to a RAW image there's no comparison. That's on a technical level.

On the other hand, you've got people who don't pixel peep and audiences who don't care. So is it all that bad?

Especially as a replacement for hokey 35mm Adapter systems that've tided us over until now.

Scroll down the page a ways. You will find it.
Wow. It's utterly ridiculous and impractical, but still wow. It boggles the mind why anyone would spend so much on cine glass just to put it on a gh1 though.

I agree. Big improvement over DOF adapters. Great camera for web videos and photojournalists.

Where the new dSLR HD video cameras WIN big over Red no matter how you cut it is,

    Weight
    Size
    Startup Time
    Ease of use

Of course Redcode trumps the hell out of H264. Nobody is saying that it isn't. All we want as consumers is for Scarlet to be at least equal if not triple the value/cost ratio. For just under $3k, the Canon 5D is smoking hot for what it is..

Renting cine glass isn't THAT bad. If it's the right tool for the job so be it.

Kholi, the camera you request at the opening post is nearly the s35 Scarlet, that Red is allegedly going to charge $7k for, and you want it for less than half that. Hey, I'm right there with ya! But I somehow doubt Red is going to go for that. They seem pretty set on having the 2/3" be the ~$3k line and then really paying for full frame.

Nearly, yes. In all honesty, though, price isn't really a major factor. Timing is.

Now, it probably takes just as long to get out a camera that does what I outlined as opposed to the originally slated Scarlet, anyway. So it's kinda moot.

I'm more for these guys kicking out a Scarlet body sooner than later.

Price will come into play later on when it's actually announced and ready for pre-orders or shipping. And by then, what's going to be on the market and how hard will it be to justify the expense of an S35 Scarlet just to get the RAW @ 3K (or whatever resolution it'll end up being).

Will it be worth the 3,000 ~ 5,000 difference for the majority to have RAW and 3/4K? That's a question, not an answer. I personally wonder why bother when you can rent a RED and shoot everything else with the still-advancing and low-priced VDSLR technology.

Just thinking out loud. Thanks for the mature response, Shawn.

Yes, yes yes yes. I totally agree with this. Carry the MKii around in a Photographers bookbag, whip it out and shoot. Can't get much easier than that!

Someone's list of available adaptors - seems to be a few months old but it gives an idea what is available.

You could buy the PL glass with a view to future RED purchase while using it on a GH1. Makes more sense than sticking a $4k DOF adapter on a sub $1k handycam. I can see it now, $22k for a set of RPP primes, $2k+ for GH1 and adapter.
