I am sad that I could not make the party. Word has traveled very fast though and i heard the reaction that people were having when they saw the RED lenses on the projector was jaw dropping.

Not sure about the S4s but the UP's will be fine on 5k. Had them tested a week ago, only the 16mm would have very slight portholing on a 33mm image circle. 20mm and up cover at least 36mm image circle.
Arent master prime is too sharp somehow ? Cooke is prefer more than MP as far as i know, DOP opinion to me. Out of 10 DOP i asked, about 7 reply said they dont like the way MP look, particularly the sharpness.
What is good for 4K is not necessarily good for 5K. Where focus falls off (and how much) matters a lot. A lens that gets soft on the edge of 4K (and look good) can completely fall apart at 5K and be unacceptable.
Jim
This is still a very subjective thing. I haven't seen the RPPs but everyone seems to agree that they're very sharp across the entire frame which can be either great or not as desired as it sounds.
I got the the RED party a little early and I managed to get my hands on one of the lenses, mechanically speaking they are as smooth as (butter!) any professional would demand. I spent sometime looking at them through a projector and comparing so what can I say? Seeing is believing...RED certainly did it again. Although the projector says a lot, I personally look forward to seeing more field test.
I just ordered a couple of sets before I ever saw them (and a metric one for myself!)...well done RED, now get those puppies out the door.
Nice catching up Jim, its always a pleasure and look forward to sharing more information about new RED centric operation right here in the heart of NYC!
I thank all for reviews and constant debates of the 4K & 5K focus fall off. Now, I know these lenses are for sale now, and I think its a 10% deposit, fine.
My question is...say I don't like them, hardy...but just for this point; is their some kind of return policy in place since I'm not fortunate like you all to be there in person and to judge for myself.
Will there be a possibility a 15-day grace period to test them and make sure I'm happy with them. I don't believe this would be the case since all of you are making great remarks of these lenses but its hard to drop 19k without feeling, seeing, or testing them since I don't want to miss out on the fantastic or discounted price? Return policy for full amount or re-stocking fee?
Looking forward to some video or stills of the footage shown hoping before April 28, I think is the deadline?
Thanks.
You should go out to Red HQ and check out the lenses before you buy them. I'm sure they would be more than happy to let you play with them. Or rent them from someone that gets them.
I have never heard of a 15-day grace period for motion picture equipment. If Best Buy starts selling the Red Primes they might be able to offer you some kind of grace period.:)
The Red Primes were very impressive.
On the aperture it only goes to 1.9 but on the side says "Tested to 1.8" why is that? Will the production sets go to 1.8?
