After amazing new RED product announcement, also calming down for a couple of days after and now it's a time to get some serious conclusion.

    What RED wanted to do?

RED wanted two flies in one hit.

One "fly" is the photography market starting with DSLR (Scarlet) via FF35 & middle format 645 (Epic) to wide format market 617 (Epic).

Another "fly" is the motion pictures market staring with 1K/2K/3K prosumers (Scarlet), via professional S35 (Epic) to high professional FF35 (Epic).

    What about competition?

Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Panavision, Arri, Viper Thompson,... they are all in ‘knockdown’ like a boxer that falls to the floor

and is unable to get up within eight months till next NAB 2009 in Las Vegas or even longer to Photokina 2009 show in Cologne.

Dynamic range is, after all, the measurement between well saturation (photosite blowout) and noise floor.

The hardest hit that caused boxer's "knockdown" was

    "13+ stops, 16 bit, S35, 100fps at full res".

I don't see many of my photographer friends that are going to rush out and buy these... way too expensive for stills. Not to mention we are just looking at rendered images... not real products. So I really don't see this bit about knocking down Nikon, Canon, etc. That is extremely premature. Too much hype going around. The S35 Scarlet will be well over 10k for a full system... at that price range most of my friends would look at a Hasselblad H3DII-31, 31 Megapixel, SLR Digital Camera... that comes with a lens for $ 17,893.95.

    What?

The nearest Canon competitor to the Scarlet FF35 is the Canon EOS1ds mark III which at a price of ~$6,800 for the just the body is still in Scarlet's target market range. The ability to capture full frame at up to 30fps will certainly persuade a lot of paparazzi and serious photo journalists to jump on board. They're already itching for a camera like this...
