As we are building a new system for FCP, the question has come up about burning Blueray DVD's.
Is anyone burning them from their system?
Is there an aplication inside FCP that does this or is it 3rd party?
I see that the burners are about $500......any suggestions???

you cant burn blueray with dvd studio pro, which is the dvd authoring program that comes with fcp studio.
you can buy a blue ray burner and use dvd encore (i think its called, that comes with adobe CS).
But soon... fcp studio should be in for a major update including the blueray burner and dvdsp support... and new mac pro... been overdue for a loong time....
If you need any advice or help ill be glad to help - i have lots of experience taking a complete fcp route, from offline- to online - tv, dvd ...

I wrote this before, but you can encode h.264 bluray ready media with the latest Apple Compressor, then author them in Adobe Encore. They work pretty well. The encoder comes with Encore didn't look good at all, looses a lot of resolution. You can even burn 24p project and play it back on Playstation 3, too.

regarding toast and the like...
If you are going to make dvd´s commercially (to be sold in shops) are are some dvd standards that has to be met. For instance it can not be a "copied" dvd, as many players cant read copied dvd. - when you burn in DVDsp it is not read as a copied one. Toast might be fine, but I dont know - I know ive never heard of a p-house using toast to make dvd´s except maybe for client preview...
I had a client who didnt want to pay me for authoring his dvd, too expensive he said, he got someone to do it cheap, who didnt know about "first play" and the standards. Result = 10.000units had to be withdrawn from shops after customers complained about no picture or black start up screen. Need less to say ever since I was his only choice when making dvd´s.
just be certain about what your programs can or cant do.

Kaku has it right. Encode H.264 from Compressor and go out to disc via Encore. The encoder in Encore is MPEG2 and doesn't look as good. Toast is best for data discs, IMO.
If you are authoring BluRay for the intent of distribution commercially, then you'll have to hop on over to Windows for now. Perhaps Encore CS4 gives us some new BluRay abilities, but I haven't got my hands on CS4 yet. I've asked and asked in various places, but no one has answers for me about Encore CS4 and if the menu and asset creation abilities for BluRay are improved any. I know the encoder is still the same MPEG2 as CS3.

It looks like our Avid may prove to be the better machine for Blue Ray burning. Thanks for the feedback.

Jeff, we downloaded the CS4 beta so we'll be looking at how they are improved, I hear the dynamic link thing is a lot better and porting dat to Encore is easier. Not sure if any of the Bluray function is better, but works a lot better with 64 bit environment with "emulating" 64 bit compatible programming (except Photoshop being true 64-bit ready).
By the way, I use one of the first Panasonic Bluray internal drive (that wasn't even mentioned that it is Mac compatible) which works well, also have a x4 speed compatible LG drive which didn't work with Encore on Mac. How about everybody else?
