Strange orange on the LF, are they RED? What color are the stripes?
I've done the Helium/Dragon/Alexa LF/Alexa Mini test:
I'll posting the results soon!
Im curious about the color strips on spyderchecker..Is it Orange or not ?
That's awesome! Please post a few .r3d/.ari frames (or super short clips).
OH MAN! Is that are those MF Focal Reducers on the Dragon and Alexa Mini? Ha!
Yes, it's the Kipon Baveyes Pentax 67 to Red medium format focal reducer. It reduces the IMAX size Pentax lenses down to the Dragon sensor creating an IMAX-like image. It also increases the exposure by 1-stop. However, the Pentax 67 lens on the Alexa Mini is mounted via an EF adapter without any focal reduction.
Yep no problem. Will be uploading the following to wetransfer for others to download and work with:
Red Helium 8K .r3d
Red Dragon 6k .r3d
Arri Alexa LF 4.5K .ari
Arri Alexa Mini 4K .mov (the Mini I used for the test did not have the RAW license so I shot ProRes 4444)
Okay, so here's the results from the test (which I decided to do without colour charts and instead framed all cameras against a window)...
Camera settings were the following:
800iso
24fps
180 degree shutter
5600K
T4
The Helium and Dragon were set to 8K (8:1) and 6K (6:1) respectively. Both cameras used IPP2 and low-light OLPFs
The LF was set to LF 2.39:1 4.5K arriraw
The Mini was set to 4K UHD ProRes 4444 as it did not have the raw license
First up, here is a screen grab from each camera in Log (LOG3G10 for RED and LOG-C for ARRI)
Helium Log (with Leica 80mm)
LF Log (with Leica 50mm)
Dragon Log (with Pentax 90mm)
Mini Log (with Pentax 55mm)
Second, we have the same with REC709 luts.
The RED cameras used: RWG_Log3G10 to REC709_BT1886 with LOW_CONTRAST and R_4_VerySoft size_33 v1.13.cube
The ARRI cameras used: AlexaV3_K1S1_LogC2Video_Rec709_EE.cube
Helium Rec709 (with Leica 80mm)
LF Rec709 (with Leica 50mm)
Dragon Rec709 (with Pentax 90mm)
Mini Rec709 (with Pentax 55mm)
So there's several things to note here: The Dragon combined with the 1-stop focal reducer measures accurately in terms of ISO alongside the other 3 cameras. If I were to put the same focal reducer on the Helium, the Helium would measure 1 stop faster than the LF and Mini. So, the Dragon is typically 1-stop slower than the other cameras even when all 4 are set to 800iso.
The 90mm Pentax 67 lens combined with the focal reducer on the Dragon has a wider angle of view to the Pentax 55mm on the Alexa Mini. The Helium with the 80mm Leica appears to have an almost similar angle of view to the 55mm + Mini. This demonstrates the benefit of the larger sensors with Red cameras.
Naturally, the LF sensor is larger than all (twice as large as the sensor in the Mini). I'd be happy to compare it to the Monstro one day.
Dynamic range is excellent and essentially identical on all cameras, though if there's a difference, it's likely only noticeable in extreme stress-test lighting conditions.
Given this, ALL 4 cameras are brilliant.
What do you guys think?

I think people will be wondering why you didn't shoot something that would allow for more of the different cameras characteristics to be compared.
It's already known they're all good cameras.
Speaking for myself, I was just waiting out of curiosity to see something that would let me explore and compare the different image qualities that each camera captures.
Did you shoot more than that window shot?
