When I filmed the The First Look piece 2 years ago there were only 3 focal lengths available.

With the just announced 135mm T1.5 the Tokina Cinema Vista set now is a family of 7 different focal lengths.

    18, 25, 35, 50, 85, 105, and 135mm all purpose designed for RED's VistaVision format size (46.31mm image circle) with a very fast T1.5 aperture.

Having access to the prototype 135mm just before IBC 2019 I thought it would be a nice time to do a bit of back to back test with focus pulls, perspective draws, lens flare, and a little bonus test scene.

I get really excited about new glass, especially when I'm the first to even see what a lens can do on a camera. Though this test was all at T 1.5, more typically I'd likely be working stopped down, but the plane separation of the 135mm is very impressive. I'm racking focus between eyes in the first section, that indeed is a very shallow depth of field. Also to highlight that there's virtually zero breathing on the 135mm, which isn't exactly common when it comes to longer cinema lenses.

They also have a set called the Tokina Cinema Vista One Primes, which are the same glass (focus, breathing, mechanics all the same), but different coatings. I took this time to also do a side by side comparison of the difference in lens flare and very subtle variation in look.

Interestingly enough this whole test shoot came to be because I wanted to test out the Vistas versus the Vista Ones for an upcoming short film, but once I was told I could have the 135mm for a day, I jumped at the chance to do this.

Please forgive the dust in the gate on the lens flare test. It was over 100 degrees and we had a massive fan at this location that was necessary for us to even survive!

All filmed on RED Monstro 8K VV at maximum 8K FF 8192x4320 resolution.

A 135mm T1.5 with Tokinas generous coverage is pretty amazing!

ps Perhaps that means we may see a T2 200mm or similar? I really need one of those...

I wonder what the coverage of these guys is on a speedmount on Gemini, etc.

That extra image circle may let them cover the entire Gemini/Helium/Dragon Sensor even speed-boosted.
