Man, I'm really noticing how much extra yellow is in the IPP2 skin tones... It's kinda crazy.

That being said, the primers are definitely darker, which I think negates a lot of the "cleaner" benefits.

    You haven't seen anything yet...

    :)

    Btw...don't look at just tonality.

    Check skin definition.

    Nope.

They just seem darker if the standard route is taken as a reference.
For a healthy, well defined, stable and thick image - this is a reference.

Some stops of DR have to be reserved for shadows. For utmost density and a thick image for post, this is the proper distribution and exposure decisions benefit from this preview.

Cleanliness and stability of noise and texture is not just a property of luminance levels but harmony and precision of signal mapping.

Generic transform routes tend to "explode" the signal, which has a couple of prices on image quality. One of which is a tendency to enhance noise.

Here is another camera maker example. Not darker this time, but cleaner still.
Few things to see here. Five, more precisely.

What you are seeing here is a more stable signal, which manifests through cleaner texture, and even when brightness is enhanced texture remains more consistent.

Primers have higher micro contrast, midtone contrast and/or overall contrast than standard routes (it varies) while having improved noise performance.
Because the signal is harmonized and stabilized in depth per analysed sensor response.

With first route - that shot would require NR and post salvaging.
Cannot be used for reliable post work. Only monitoring.

With second route that shot can hit the big screen without NR and that route can be used for post.
    It is designed for it.

More examples from the latest generation added on the first page.

    Useful info prior to viewing:

    1) I've chosen some of the imagery which I can post publicly and offers the insight into many image properties which are optimized with Primers.
Tonal feel will be the most obvious. Look for others.

    2) These are NOT "grades" so don't attempt to rationalize these as the outcome of post-production image manipulation.
These images are manifestations, the outcome of per-sensor & base CS tailored signal design and optimization.

    3) I've chosen one of the IPP2 LUTs with the closest appearance to chosen Primers to give you some kind of useful reference of departure from the known.
With other IPP2 LUTS and Primers differences enlarge in various image aspects. These are mutually the closest.

    4) Some images may seem "darker" if perceived reference is the chosen IPP2 LUT.

    5) Some image property differences you will not notice through side by side viewing, you will need to toggle A/B for some to become perceivable.

    6) Staring too long at the option B may trick your eyes into perception of option A.

    7) There are many things optimized which are not visible but necessary for what becomes visible and the feel of the visible.

    8) Principles of image signal optimization manifest with all currently supported RED sensors. It doesn't matter which one it is.

    9) Full size grabs are scaled to HD. Looking at scaled of scaled misses some things.

    10) For the best insight into images and differences, calibrated professional OLED is the route.

Few more examples here with practical comparison principle.
Not for phone viewing. : )
