Mark, how does the 21-35mm fare against the primes in the same range? Looking at some landscape work (still photography as well) is this a better choice over the 35mm 1.4?

Good question Thomas. Not having tested them side-by-side, I'd say the 21-35mm is probably better for landscape work (with its Aspherical correction) than the 35/1.4. Also the 35/1.4 seems to like its subject to be much closer (ie within 20 feet or so). Though I'm almost certain the 28/2.8 v2 will outperform the zoom for landscape work, whereas with the 24/2.8 I'm not so sure... it'd likely be a close call.

    Hope this helps some.

Mark, very helpful, in my case, the 28v2 may be the best bet. By chance, any thoughts on the Leica 28-90mm vario-elmarit-r – performance against the f/4 35-70?

The 28-90 is the better lens optically speaking. However its not par-focal like the 35-70 F4 (which is). In other words if you're zoomed in and set focus, then zoom out the image quickly goes out of focus and vice versa. Therefore I cannot recommend the 28-90 for cineuse unless you know that going into it and plan to use it more like a prime lens.

80-200 has now sold. But my favorite in this trio, the wide zoom, is still available:

    21-35/3.5-4 Zoom #395... 2002 – $2600

Better than most primes and gorgeous Leica colors/rendering style.
